Typically, side mounts have an upper and lower inlet. The lower goes to the engine bay (kind of under the frame) and the upper goes through the hole in your frame left over from your old air box. It's a tight fit, but it works.

As far as air flow, it's obviously not as efficient as a front mount, but I cut out a small portion of the fender liner to fix that.

I have lower bumper signals on my accord and I removed them and use one of the old signals to direct air over the intercooler. THe cold was cool enough to hold last night after several 40-115mph pulls with my friends WRX. it works flawlessly...a cooling unit will be in order for the summer but for now it works really well. I wouldnt suggest a SMIC if you cant get DIRECT flow. Its not going to be as efficiant as the FMIC and heat soak is probably going to be an issue. if you devise a lower scoop-VENT that can eliviate some of the heat soak. but if you cant get direct flow...just run an FMIC.

ive also seen this done and though its close to the manifold, the temperature difference is still there over a SMIC

I use a 2G smic on my 93 hatch and it fit fine inside the front bumper, and i've had no problems @7psi with it.not bad for some free junk off the side of my friends house it just needed a shot of black paint ;Dsmic are also cool if you want the sleeper look.
