FMIC or SMIC..
Okay I looked at all of the Turbo Projects on homemadeturbo.com for the d16z16 using the 14b 1g DSM turbo....and i see that all of the projects are using FMIC's...Since either way you have to do custom piping, would a SMIC from a 2g DSM work? I hear that when using a FMIC and only running around 6psi, it can actually lose hp...anyone with dyno pages of d16z6 with homemade turbo that has FMIC? Thanks in advance

Re:FMIC or SMIC..
You only lose a bit of power because of pressure drop through the cooler but you make that up by cranking the boost a bit.

Re:FMIC or SMIC..
Running low boost with a FMIC you wont lose noticebale power, you can make it up by boosting a little more anyways and not worrying about sucking in warmer air and the detontation. SMIC are ok but if you think about it you are still sucking in a lot of the warm air under the hood, FMIC is more efficient and will along you to do more in the future as well as far as higher boost levels.

and...uh...they look cool too ;D
just make sure you use the right size diameter on the piping ;) |
Re:FMIC or SMIC..
why not use a sidemount thats mounted like a front mount? makes sense... no pressure drop... same nice cold air as a front-mount would pick up.

Re:FMIC or SMIC..
Or if you have a tig welding friend... smics are so nice and cheap... http://home.comcast.net/~typer/turbobuild/14.jpeg
it flowed well enough with a 6inch bead on one side, other sides not even welded yet, that it did this.... http://home.comcast.net/~typer/turbobuild/5.jpeg 6ft fireball just from blowing into the end of it... |

Re:FMIC or SMIC..
Audi A4 SMIC mounted ont he side 8)...although it could be fit in the bumper if need be. I just like it hidden..it has a vent...no big deal for me...it WERKS :-*

Re:FMIC or SMIC..
got any pics of it mounted in the side? how is air flowing to it?

As far as air flow, it's obviously not as efficient as a front mount, but I cut out a small portion of the fender liner to fix that. |
Re:FMIC or SMIC..
I have lower bumper signals on my accord and I removed them and use one of the old signals to direct air over the intercooler. THe cold was cool enough to hold last night after several 40-115mph pulls with my friends WRX. it works flawlessly...a cooling unit will be in order for the summer but for now it works really well. I wouldnt suggest a SMIC if you cant get DIRECT flow. Its not going to be as efficiant as the FMIC and heat soak is probably going to be an issue. if you devise a lower scoop-VENT that can eliviate some of the heat soak. but if you cant get direct flow...just run an FMIC.

Re:FMIC or SMIC..
if you're a/c is off, u can put it where the condenser used to be. thts where i have my 2G i/c. just give it a shot of flat black, and its all good. ;D

Re:FMIC or SMIC..
I use a 2G smic on my 93 hatch and it fit fine inside the front bumper, and i've had no problems @7psi with it.not bad for some free junk off the side of my friends house it just needed a shot of black paint ;Dsmic are also cool if you want the sleeper look.
