FMIC or SMIC..

Okay I looked at all of the Turbo Projects on homemadeturbo.com for the d16z16 using the 14b 1g DSM turbo....and i see that all of the projects are using FMIC's...Since either way you have to do custom piping, would a SMIC from a 2g DSM work? I hear that when using a FMIC and only running around 6psi, it can actually lose hp...anyone with dyno pages of d16z6 with homemade turbo that has FMIC? Thanks in advance

You only lose a bit of power because of pressure drop through the cooler but you make that up by cranking the boost a bit.

Running low boost with a FMIC you wont lose noticebale power, you can make it up by boosting a little more anyways and not worrying about sucking in warmer air and the detontation. SMIC are ok but if you think about it you are still sucking in a lot of the warm air under the hood, FMIC is more efficient and will along you to do more in the future as well as far as higher boost levels.

and...uh...they look cool too ;D
just make sure you use the right size diameter on the piping ;)

why not use a sidemount thats mounted like a front mount? makes sense... no pressure drop... same nice cold air as a front-mount would pick up.

I agree! You can mount a probe/mazda MX6 IC in the fron like me and be done with it. It's quite effecient. and i wouldnt worry bout losing HP on a bigger IG, it's just turbo lag and you can do away with it by using a smaller front mount and cranking the boost up.

Good luck!

Yep, check out my thread a few post's down for a pic sample "1.9 8 valve escort", I used a stock 1G SMIC up front.

Or if you have a tig welding friend... smics are so nice and cheap... http://home.comcast.net/~typer/turbobuild/14.jpeg

it flowed well enough with a 6inch bead on one side, other sides not even welded yet, that it did this....

6ft fireball just from blowing into the end of it...
