I was wondering if anyone has put a homemade turbo kit on a D16Y8 engine with an automatic transmission. I am currently getting my parts to do an install and was wondering if the transmission would hold up. Also could I make boost off the line with an auto by hold the gas and brake to launch? Would I be looking at a large loss of hp through drive terrain because of the automatic also. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

 

I honestly have never turbo'd an automatic. But one of our members did, he actually turbo'd the manual first, then put an automatic tranny in to see the differnce. He said it was actually pretty decent, not nearly the power loss as he suspected.

As far as Honda auto trannies holding up to boost. thats another story, I have heard lots of guys with ls auto trannys burning them right up with pretty low boost. So its pretty much a gamble. I could of swore I saw a post in this forum about Stall convertors and stuff for honda trannys..?

im in the same boat as you with the autobox. i just purchased a t3 and manifold. i found a website that has all the parts for a tranny swap.

 

if you build your transmission with something to make it shift harder and a tourqe converter it will be 10x better than a manual tranny.

especially if you got a new shifter than would let you hold grears and be able to shift them without pressing a button. i'm not sure if hondas are like that now cause the only automatics i've owned where a truck with the shifter on the tree and my chevelle with it on the floor. let me tell you there is nothing better than shifting an auto and having the tires chirp (or lose tranction all together in my case) between gears.

autos are great for bracket racing too, always consitant runs. all serious drag racers use automatics.

Sport Compact Car magazine has a project CRX that is going to be using an LS automatic tranny that had been rebuilt to handle like 450hp. You should see if they have a web site, maybe they have the article online? My friend has an eclipse awd turbo that ran a 11.7 with the automatic tranny. He uses a 75 shot of nitrous to get it off the line since he cant drop the clutch at high rpm like those awd peeps like to do
