Hmm, all the brass fittings I use would squish before they crack. Maybe mine are cheap brass?

Almost nobody stress or heat hardens brass, so therefor it is almost always ductile.

I usually weld a steel bung into the pan and then thread in a brass fitting.

Nonsense... take a step bit and ream out a hole slightly smaller than the fitting, then thread it in without tapping or anything. Then take a coat hanger and braze that ---- in there.

you can braze brass?
i just used a bunch of gasket sealer. hope it holds. its in there pretty tight though, and with washers

You braze anything you can't arc weld, typically.
