You might try over on www.yotatech.com or www.celica-gts.com if you want a another opinion.
22RE EFI is about as flexible as 25 year old rubber. It's basically a first generation EFI system.
To the best of my knowledge, piggy back systems that interfere with the existing EFI don't work very well, I've never seen anyone keep one.
LC Engineering says that a "stock" 22RE will handle about 5-6 psi of boost if you drop back the initial timing and run premium gas, best case. Beyond that, you'll melt down the cast pistons in short order.
Properly tuned, you can do 200hp on stock internals, as limited by the cast pistons. Doesn't sound like much, but that's almost double your power output. It really makes the truck a lot more reasonable to drive. If you want more than 200 hp, you'll need pistons.
To answer your question:
Solutions to that problem are many.. Band-aid solutions include:
1) Rising rate fuel pressure regulator.
2) Slightly increased injector size (within about 10%)
3) Hobbs switch fired 5th injector (or use the cold start injector).
Slightly better solutions:
1) Use a stand alone (megasquirt) to fire a single alternate injector under boost, regulate it by wideband.
2) Use the 22RTE ECU and injectors. Add a resistor box to the wiring harness if your 1988 doesn't have it.
Best solution:
1) FAST EFI ($2k)
2) SDS EFI ($1500)
3) Megasquirt ($180-$300)

Re: 22re turbo guys chime in
no longer getting this 4runner, the 'standard toyota tick' that this ****** on the phone told me it had, turned out to be a bent rod from 8000rpm mud bogs on a stock motor. he rebuilt the head and was stupid enough to brag about bending all the intake valves when doing it.
also nothing left to the body, so i'm going to rebuild my 22r while i DD a inline 6 f150, then while i DD the 22r im going to build up my old efi inline 6 block for swapping
