Sheesh this thread is getting crazy, sad to say I actually read the whole thing.

My thoughts are that the internet has ruined a lot of small businesses this way: does anyone remember that old commercial where the people just put their site up on the web and were anxiously waiting for their first order? then they got a couple and were cheering and stuff, then they got 1,000,000+ orders and they all looked freaked out?

that's what's happening to these small "businesses" - i'm sure that Josh lives in a populated enough area that he could have tons of business locally to get used to the whole process, and then have his business grow gradually to the point where it was big enough to sustain internet ordering. That's how it used to go back in the day before internet. A company would build up it's reputation locally and when it got big enough word would get around and they could start shipping cross country.

Internet now-a-days makes it too easy to lie to people because they have no way to refute what you're saying, versus a local business where you could simply drive down to their shop and see if they are BS'ing you or not. Also shipping would not be a concern.

I Just see it happening all the time lately with these Fab places, it's just like Engloid was talking about, all of a sudden all they see is $$$$ and they can't keep up with the profitability the internet offers them, usually because they're just one person. Why overextend yourself if you have the ability to stay gainfully employed locally?

ANd the best part is, that the best welder amongst us (Enloid himself needless to say), who COULD pull it off, doens't start an internet shop for selling manifolds cuz he's the only one who actually thinks before he starts something, and realises this way that is costs a lot of time.

Engloid's time is worth way too much to be making manifolds as a business. I'm sure he could do it (even if it's not his favorite thing to weld) but he has too much skill to be making manifolds for a good enough profit. He could make a profit I'm sure, but he could also be getting paid more to weld other things with his skills.
