Apparently photobucket is down- so if you're new to this thread, you won't be able to see the bike from where it started, but hopefully they'll get it back up soon.

Anyway- to preface this video, obviously the bike isn't actually done, really it's just together enough to ride down the street. Barely :)

It's running strictly off of a bad mockup battery in this vid, that's why it starts cutting out on the return trip, I knew I only had a limited run :)
On thursday I'll finish up the charging stuff and hopefully ride it a tad further.

Also, the air system isn't in place, just a valve.

But it was fun!!!

Thanks for watching.

awesome.... ;D

I have one teensy little bit of a concern. It might very well have been mentioned already so pardon me it that is the case.... :)

It's safety with regards to your dropdown setup on the rear (which by the way looks fantastic in action).... do you have a way to insure that, when driving at speed, that system could not fail you in mid-flight?

I have had to endure the nastiness of loosing a rear shock ...... not particularly keen on even seeing that hapen to anyone ever again..... :)

Re: Not FI but thought you might like my bike buildup...first ride 6/17!!!

That'd be a negatory captain. :(

For the whole last few months of the build, I tried to design something that would work well, not be clumsy, and not be aesthetically crappy. But I failed. I just could not come up with a decent system. My thinking is that I won't be using this bike except for little cruises and such, so hopefully the chances of something like that happening will be much reduced. But trust me when I say, it'll always be on my mind.

Thanks
Sky

Re: Not FI but thought you might like my bike buildup...first ride 6/17!!!

Little bit longer ride on this one. Got my regulator and rectifier built and installed, so now I can ride it as long as I want.

I still need to hook up the headlight and tailight, and finish installing the compressor and air tank, make sure it all works good, then tear it all down so I can get it painted!

If you just use 2 valves instead of one, if one shock or valve fails, you will at least have something

That's a solid point. I'll have to remember that on final assembly.

Re: Not FI but thought you might like my bike buildup...New vid 6/22

Hmm, I used some bimba air cylinders to lift a large stainless lid where safety was also a concern. They have a line of 'rod locking' cylinders that have a clamp on the end of the rod. They need line pressure to release before they will let the cylinder move in any direction. It worked beautiful and you could catch the lid anywhere without any concern of the lid falling.

If that won't work for you maybe you could look into pilot operated valves on the cylinders? Bimba has these also. Something that won't let the air escape the cylinder holding you up until pressure has been applied to the pilot port. Then unless the valves get ripped directly off your cylinders you'd be better than with nothing?

just a quick suggestion.

Just curious on where you got your wheels and how much were those bad boys?

Ebay- not sure where exactly from, I bought them a long time ago. I do remember that they were still pretty affordable. The wheels and tires together only amounted to about $620.00

Hey everyone, been riding it a bit lately trying to work out all the little bugs. It's been fun zipping around. Need to get it registered so there's only 80% of the bike that is illegal :)

Anyway, just a few pictures of the bike outside my house in the grass. Obviously a lot of what you can see is temporary (zip ties, ect....) I think I've just about got the bike all worked out though, then I can tear it all down and get it painted.

man that is lookin good. ive been thinking about building my own ---- for a while now, the speeding tickets are really stacking up i might have to sell the sportbike in favor of a home made chopper soon

are there certain jap bikes that are easier to take the parts from and make to a chopper frame?

Thanks for all the positive comments guys, it was a blast to make.

As far as good bikes to start with, obviously I'm partial to the XS650, it's a nice twin, and the frame lends itself to chopping like no other. But a lot of the bikes were the same in this era. The only real differences being some were 4 cylinder (which makes running the exhaust look like crap in my opinion) and some had weird backbones on them, so do your research before you jump out the door and buy one.

Only update is now it's charging at 17v and I have no idea why, so I'm trying to track that down before everything electrical on the bike burns up!

Tried a new one already, no dice.

My main problem is that I don't do electrical, but secondly, I built this harness from scratch, so I can't really ask for a lot of help from others, I've just got to figure it out.

I'm sorry O Great One. I cannot believe I've failed you. <bows in humiliation>

I'm sorry I asked such a stupid question! Man. I'm such an idiot. I should have known everything about this type of bike, because I build and SEE bagged bikes all day long, so I should have remembered that that happens.. Man... sometimes I amaze myself at how forgetful I can be.

Re: Not FI but thought you might like my bike buildup...

My motorcycle experience ends with me working on my own sportbikes. I'm not into choppers. Common sense will tell you a couple things about that chain.

1) nobody would ever try to ride a bike with a chain that loose.
B) since he hand built that bike, I'm sure he knows enough not to ride it like that and he will fix it before he rides.
3) its obvious with where the pivot point is of the swing arm and the front sprocket location that it will get tighter as the suspension extends.
