the last picture of it looks TITS, but IMO I would rotate it about 2-3 inches more forward

Last picture is perfect IMO. Slightly rotated forward, not too much.

Re: Not FI but thought you might like my bike buildup...fender pics 3/11

you need to trim the sides down before deciding on the placement. its going to make the fender look longer once its trimmed down. looks way to 50's stepside right now.

Just my two cents but the fender hides to much of your nice work. Maybe after you've trimmed the sides I'll see where you're going. And I noticed something strange in one picture. The tag bracket in the middle where weld is the heat made the image of a eye. Maybe I just need some sleep :S

i love old school style bikes, its turning out great man. cant wait to see this thing when all done.

the fender placement and amount of fender you wanna put on there realy stands out on a bike. i would draw something up on paper just to get an idea of what your looking for before commiting to anything first.
how about the front.. you gonna put a fender on at all?

Her name is Jocelyn, and she was born at 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning, and she's perfect! She was a big girl at 8lbs 13oz.

For those wondering, epidurals are the greatest thing ever invented. My wife is doing great and we just got to come home from the hospital.

Watching her birth was the craziest thing I've ever seen.

More updates to come on the bike, but just had to show her off :)

I'm liking it so far. Again, the sides will be cut down to slim up the fender. Also, I'm going to make some mini round bar struts to keep the top steady.

I also got my new compressor in- The last one was just too physically big to fit into where I needed it to be along with the tank and battery and electricals. I included the can to show the actual size, this thing is tiny! Much better. Will take a bit longer to fill the tank, but I'm not too concerned.

I liked my design, so I went with it :)

Check the pics and let me know whatcha think. I ran out of bends right at the last minute, so the top pipe doesn't have a turnout on it, I'll have to get another bend to finish it, but I'm really pleased with the way they came out. Fitment in some areas isn't as perfect as I wanted it, but really they turned out nice.
I'm going to finish weld them, and add some supports, maybe even a couple tabs on the backside with a spring connecting the two.

how much shock travel do you have in the front?
how much space do you have under the front of the frame when the rear is raised?

good question on the shock travel, I'm not sure, whatever the stock travel is for a 2004 zx6r i guess?

The lowest point on the frame when aired up has just over 4" of clearance. Won't be a problem.

I worked on it a little more today, I wasn't happy with the first shifter and linkage setup I made- it looked too crappy. So I made a new lever out of roundbar, the tabs will be shaped soon. The linkage itself turned out pretty good.

Attachment 18695
Attachment 18696

I cut out the rear fender finally, and made some struts for it. Came out pretty well I thought. I might give the struts themselves a little more support. I also cut the section out to clear the chain.

Attachment 18697
Attachment 18698
Attachment 18699

To answer the question of how much clearance I'll have, I finally got a new tube in the front tire and aired everything up. As I suspected, at the lowest point I had 4" of clearance. The little green circle is where it's finally touching.
If I manage to get this bike this far over, I'm going to scare myself!

Attachment 18700

Also, as a side note: I'm a cheap fellow, and I don't want to pay the local harley place for a new petcock for my tank. If anyone has a spare Sportster petcock lying around that they would sell me for cheap, let me know!

Thanks guys

Looks real good, especially the exhaust. I've always liked those 650 twins... It's also nice to see people building custom bikes that don't have a retardedly raked-out front end...This makes me want to go back and build the bike for my sohc 750 mill I've got layin around

Not very original, and the company doesn't even exist yet Ha! Hopefully my brother and I can get it up and running within a year or so.

The logo itself should look pretty good though, I'll unveil it when I show the paint.

Speaking of the paint, I think I've changed my mind. The frame will be gloss black. the tins will have a 1" satin black border and the logo will still be satin black. The rest will be dark green with a small bit of flake in it. What do you think?

Worked on it today a little bit.

Got my levers in, keeping with the theme, they're both from a Kawasaki ZX6R-

Attachment 18369
Attachment 18370
Attachment 18371

As you can see, I made a little tab and welded it to the bars to support the resevoir. Yes, it is low, the brake system will be bled first, then the contols will be installed.

Also, yes, the levers do stick out past the ends of the bars, this was on purpose. I'm replacing the stock levers with shorty style dirbike levers. Should look good.

I also welded a tab to the rear of the gas tank, there will be a stud welded to the backbone that it will bolt to.

Attachment 18372

Finally got the holes drilled and the hardware installed for the rear fender struts, they look clean, and it's solid as a rock now.

Attachment 18373

Also got my calipers in, I need to order the rotors so I can get the spacing correct.

Attachment 18374

I received my offset sprocket from Gary Poh- absolutely fantastic work!

Attachment 18375

He also made the new extended clutch rod as well.

I don't think I ever posted it, but awhile back, because I knew the side cover would have to be offset so far, I cut the cover in half so the front would still sit flush. That was a poor idea  there was not enough mounting points in the rear to support it when the clutch was used.

I'll probably get another case cover eventually, but I was intrigued. I hadn't yet welded aluminum, let alone cast aluminum, but I figured I'd give it a shot.
Let me tell you, welding that stuff is fascinating! The way it reacts and the technique you have to use. Absolutely fascinating! I did an OK job, and the clutch works like it's supposed to now, which makes me happy :)

Again I'll probably get another cover, cut it to fit. And I'm also going to try to weld in aluminum strips to cover the gaps. It may not look amazing, but I can't remember when I've been so excited about welding something :)

Attachment 18376

Also, I tried to set up the chain, WAY more slack than I was expecting. A tensioner setup is not going to get the job done. I'm going to have to run a jackshaft setup as close to the pivot point as possible. I have most all of the parts needed already, I just need to get the sprockets.

Thanks for looking guys!!!

Glad to see people are still interested in this.

Unfortunately, not too much is new. I've got the jackshaft adjustable pedestal designed, I'm going to try to build it tomorrow.

Also, I've got the bike completely torn down so I can finish weld it. I find it quite boring, but I need to do it now so I don't have to do it later.

My main problem is that the NBA playoffs start tomorrow, and I'm an NBA junkie, so I'll be watching basketball for a month and half straight :) that might slow my progress some.

I'm taking the bike down to a local show today at 1:00- It's a small local shop that is celebrating being open for a year now, They are the main outlet for Big Mike's Choppers, BMC. The show should be pretty good, they'll have a few other bikes on display, a BBQ, and a bikini bike wash with the girls from the local burlesque house :P

I'm going to try to get a few pictures and I'll post them up tonight for you guys....

Haven't done a ton lately, tore the bike completely down so I could weld it all up. Welds turned out pretty nice this time. Quite happy with them.

Finished the exhaust finally, put the bike back together and threw it on a trailer to take it down to a local show. It was really weird to see it outside my garage! Had a fun time, took a few pics:

Ok, so I got a bunch of stuff from Mike's XS so I could try to get the motor running. My parents came up this weekend and I was really hoping to get it running with my dad here.

We hooked up the coils and points and condensers, rigged up some gas lines. and 6 kicks into it she fired right up! Sounds amazing, no problems at all.

Now she fires on the first kick every time. Here's the video to prove it!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXeLUeG2PD0

I'm really excited because I bought the bike as a non-runner so I never knew if it would run or not, and it does!

Hooray for me :)

Thanks

I'd say probably 2 1/2-3 months from now. I need to get the bike fully together and take it for a ride to make sure everything is ok, then I'll break it down and paint it.

Just a little bit of work today, fabbed up a mount for the rear of the exhaust, so it doesn't vibrate a ton and crack the welds. Not the prettiest thing I've made, but it tucks away pretty well and seems to function nicely.
Also, I think it's obvious but I'll say it anyway, the bolt that's there right now is just for mockup, the actual bolt will be stainless with a nylock nut.

Attachment 17458

Attachment 17459

Attachment 17460

Also made the battery box, turned out really well! Fairly snug fit for the battery, but not so much that it can't breath or will get stuck. It always astounds me that making a rectangular box can take up so much time!

Attachment 17461

Attachment 17462

Attachment 17463

I've got my brake lines in the mail right now. As soon as my brother mails me up the spacers he made for my rotors, and I purcahse a set of brake pads, I'll be able to bleed the lines and my front brakes will be done!

I came up about 3 links short on my chain, so I'm trying to track down some more chain here locally. (anyone who has about a foot of 530 o-ring chain they don't need, send it my way!) Once I get that worked out, I can take the bike for a ride! The air system won't be done, the bike won't really be wired, but I'll at least be able to take it for a run around the block. Whoo-hoo!

Ah yes, almost forgot, I made the jackshaft pedestal a little while ago.

Attachment 17464

I don't have it in place in this picture, but you can see the nut welded to the backside for the bolt to go through that keeps the jackshaft assembly from sliding forward after the chain is tensioned.

Attachment 17465

I was actually pretty happy with my welds on this as well.

Attachment 17466

They're not that amazing yet, but little by little I get better.
