Lovin it so far!

That wouldn't really fit with what I'm trying to do for the rest of the bike, but thinking about it, I really like that idea, I will probably do that on my next bike I build.

Here you can see, I got my air cylinders, air compressor (it's the 3/4hp model, I wanted the 1/3hp which is smaller, but they were backordered for 6 weeks, and they gave me an 80.00 discount to upgrade), 1 gallon air tank, air valve, rear sprocket, headlight, jackshaft assembly (minus the sprockets, they'll be here next week), rear axle and wheel spacers (they need to be cut to fit), and the chain (which was a nice suprise, because the color scheme on this bike is going to be satin black and gold, I didn't know the chain would come gold like that.)

Here's a somewhat mockup showing the placement of stuff in the rear section. This stuff is by no means set in stone- it's all dependant on how it goes together.

Attachment 21953

And a fun shot of the headlamp mounting position, I really like this headlight, little bit of old school look to it.

Attachment 21954

I have to go to Seattle all next week for training at work, then another week of work, but then, over christmas and new years time, I get that whole week off, and much should get done. I'm renting a plasma cutter to cut brackets and mounting tabs, ect....
Here's my to-do list:

Finish bars with headlight mounting point
Install compressor, tank, and cylinders
cut out seat pan, basically finish the seat besides covering
cut out license plate backer plate and finish mounting to side of swingarm
Finish rear axle blocks and get rear axle mounted in place properly
Install rear sprocket and set up jackshaft assembly
Attempt to pressurize system and see just how much clearance I have

I also need to put the motor back in during the air system install, to make sure I won't have any clearance issues later.

Thanks
Sky

If it were a Harley then yea, but with the little jap motors, the trans is integrated with the engine itself. It's all one self contained unit.

Got the headlamp mount made today, don't mind the mess, I'm gearing up for the last week of Dec. should get a bunch done:

Attachment 21724

Attachment 21725

This shot is kind of funny, looks like the light is on because of the flash

Attachment 21726

here's a closer shot

Attachment 21727

I kind of tried to match the curvature of the headlight with the mount, and I'm pretty happy with it. Final welding and blending has not been done on the mount or the bars obviously.

the headlight mount is going to vibrate, add some bracing

'Tis in the works captain, from what I hear, these motors vibrate almost as much as a big twin!

Sorry I haven't updated in awhile, I didn't get as much done as I wanted to in my time off, I think I kind of forced it too much, and in the process I made something I didn't like. I almost went ahead anyway, but I just couldn't look at it and be happy, so I took it off.

What I did get done:
cut out the seat pan:

Attachment 20874

Finished up the rear axle blocks, so the rear wheel sits in place properly now (also mounted the sprocket), you can also see the baseplate for the rear section that I cut out, haven't finished it though:

Attachment 20875

In that last picture you can also see the bracket I made to connect the air cylinders to the swingarm, they turned out OK, but then I was trying to make the mid-bracket, the strong one to hold the cylinders in place, like so:

Attachment 20876
Attachment 20877

It turned out so-so, and the longer I looked at it the more I hated it, so out it came. I'm trying to think of a better way to mount it right now.

I also tossed in the motor to make sure that nothing I was making ended up in the way of anything else. Note- the exhaust will not route like that.

I also cut out the brackets to make the forward control for the shifter, that should be done this weekend (hopefully)

Now to one of the main issues. When mounting the cylinders, I was under the impression that the output sprocket on the motor was offset more to the side, with the motor in, here's my mistake:

Attachment 20878

Whoops! :)

I might have to run a dual jackshaft type deal to get it to clear, but I think I've got it figured out now.

It was just one of those things where I was putting too much pressure on myself to get stuff done, and it was taking the fun out of it. So I had to take a break for a couple weeks to get the passion back. After all, if I'm not having fun, then why am I doing this?

Anyway I appreciate all the support I've seen here, and now that I'm back on the wagon, I should start getting some regular updates again.

thanks
Sky

I've got a new idea as far as mounting the air cylinders, but to make the bracketry I'm getting a bandsaw in a week or so. So I decided to work on some other little things.

Worked on the forward control for the shifter:

Attachment 20617

But mainly worked on mounting the seat pan:

I think I definitely went overkill on the thickness of this stuff, bending it was a pain in the ass!

Attachment 20618

As if that wasn't going to be enough, bent up additional support for the bottom:

Attachment 20619

Drilled the base plate peice and the pan itself:

Attachment 20620

Attachment 20621

Attachment 20622

Turned out pretty good I thought. Still have to do finish welding on it, it's just tacked into place right now. But I'm happy. Maybe tomorrow I'll work on mounting the license plate mount.

impressive progress. why not run a single air cylinder in the rear?

96turboracer 01-27-2008 01:58 AM

Re: Not FI but thought you might like my bike buildup...new pics 1/26

There were two reasons, First, the added stability of two attachment points on the rear swingarm, and more importantly, because I'm expecting this thing to ride like a rigid when aired up, the force the cylinders exert must be strong enough to overcome any force given to them while riding. I got a table chart that showed sizing, and to get the same amount of force I have now with these two cylinders using only one, the cylinder would be about 5" bore. Which I think would look pretty silly, and it would be pretty expensive.

Haven't gotten much done this week- it's been snowing like this all week:

Attachment 20371

That was early last Sunday, it's been snowing like that pretty much all week. trying to keep my driveway clear has been a total pain. Pretty much the only thing I accomplished was finishing the linkage for the shifter;

Attachment 20372

going to do the finish welding and clean it up a bit, but it should work good.

Bandsaw comes in on Tues. and I'll get right on mounting the air cylinders properly. Once I get them mounted I can plumb them and hopefully mount all the other items. that way I can test the system and see how well it's going to work. I'm excited about getting to that point!

from looking at this i dont see how that would work. the mount on the rear tire is going to trace out a circular arc not a strait path so when you go to pump it up it is going to bend the pistons

Smith-02 02-02-2008 07:47 PM

Re: Not FI but thought you might like my bike buildup...new pics 1/26

make the plate pivot on a centerline with the pistons, alongwith those tubes around the plates. thread the bolts from outside the frame rails, nuts welded to the plate. problem solved, just button heads to give it a little cleaner look.

I forgot to mention the best part while working on the bike yesterday.

I was welding up some of the bracing, and my thumb was really hot, I figured it was just the proximity of it to the welding and kept going. Then I saw out the corner of the mask, and my hand was on fire :)

Haha, first time I've done that, was pretty funny actually. Thankfully my glove took all the punishment. Good times- I need some thicker gloves :)

Well I haven't had too much time to work on the bike lately, my wife is due in less than three weeks, so it could be anytime! I'm so excited!

Anyway, did work on it a little bit today. Got my license plate mount done and tacked into place. Also, the footpegs did not come out far enough before, and I was having a hard time coming up with a good solution, but I got some inspiration today, and I love the way they turned out!! Don't worry, there'll be some bracing and gussets added for strength.

Also, the jackshaft plan of mine has failed miserably. But, Gary Poh, who offers those offset sprockets, is making me a specially sized offset. It'll save me a lot of trouble. Also, the rear sprocket I had was much too large- I plugged in the trans ratios in an online calculator, and apparently in fifth gear at 7,000rpm, I'd be doing about 45 :)
So I also got a stock tooth sized sprocket from Gary- thanks again man!

I think I'm going to change my forward control as well, it just didn't come out as nice as I wanted.

On to the pics:

just set up a quick demonstration of the air system for myself, thought it'd be fun to put it online. Just a practice to see how well it's working. And I must say, I'm pretty happy :)
The rails in this video are right at about 4", and it'll come up even more because my front tire has a hole in the tube, so once I'm able to air it up properly it should give me another inch or so. No dragging for me!

Just curious, what are you gonna do about the chain when you raise and drop it? The distance from when it dropped to when it's raise looks like it's moving back quite abit? Fit the chain for when it's fully raised and incorporate a tensioner of some sort otherwise wouldnt' there be alot of slack on it when you drop it? I'm probably not seeing something and just being retarded. Cool ---- though. Pissing me off my bike still isn't in my garage and the dude said he would drop it off and I have no way of getting to my house. Hell if I'm gonna drive it home in the snow.

OK, so I don't think I've ever been more wrong about how something would look on my bike.

I received my rear fender today, and all along I figured that there would barely be a fender there, just a smallish nub, enough to mainly keep the dirt off my back, but putting the fender on the bike changes the whole look of it, and honestly, I kinda like it.

Here's a bunch of pictures of the fender in various places with the bike aired up, and down.

Let me know what you think looks best,

Yeah that's just the fender blank, the sides will definitely be trimmed down, just trying to see what length looks best.
