Default elephant maniolfd w/ turbo exhaust facing down

Ok, i had an idea about making a elephant top mount with the turbo mounted with the exhaust facing down. And the intake outlet side pointed towards pass side of car. The cold piping would loop around to a water to air intercooler. Where to place bov (before or after cooler)? Things that concern me are oil flow through the turbo since its on it side, support for the turbo. What other problem or concerns does everyone think i should have?

The car is a 91 sedan with a B16.

Thanks, Zach

i don't think this idea will work. center sections are designed to drain the oil naturally by gravity, not by a pump. the casting itself is designed in a way that there are no pockets of oil sitting in it over heating and basically cooking to the inside of the casting. you would also be putting a lot of stess/pressure on the exhaust side seal since it would always have hot boiling oil sitting on it basically for the life of the turbo. i would also expect to have unusual wear on the shaft bearings as well.

if this isn't reason enough, there is probably a better reason why no one has done this before.

but hey, why not be different and let us know how it all works out.

Thanks for the quick reply. Guess i will lean away from turning it on its side and just have it sit regularly. But now what to do elephant or sink trap ...hmmm...

Well im looking at using a holset with it. But now may be buying another members manifold.

Dont want to ruin a holset, getting hard to find for good prices

also doesnt the pressure itself from the oil keep the oil seal from leaking? If you were pumping it out, maybe that would effect that?

No- Holset themselves actually issues a specification for this in their service manual. The oil drain is a gravity drain and the chra/return line is not to be tilted more than 30 degrees from vertical.

It's not an issue of it leaking or not, it is an issue of evacuating the (often extremely aerated) hot oil out of the bearing.

Feel free to do what you want, but when the manufacturer of the part is telling you not to do it, don't be too suprised when your turbo takes a dump in short order.
