pvc is great for mock up, its really cheap and works...

ive used it for mock up on exhaust (probably work for mani's too, not those damn expensive legos)

the pipe argument always goes on in the 4x4 forums, someone actually did it, and rolled it, and has rolled it about 40 more times w/ no significant damamge....
