Backpurging isnt 100% necessary for something to last. However as you see in the picture, it does create a smoother more uniform weld and theres nothing wrong with that if you have the tools to do it.

You don't need to backpurge if your using sch10 304 stainless piping. The material is so thick that it won't crack even if you get only 75% penetration. It will make it look nice on the inside and it is the right way to do it but its not needed. The SS auto manis are garbage because they use thin wall exhaust tubing and then mandrel bend it, making the bends even thinner. That with no support brackets on the turbo cause it to break or crack.
