From Solvent to Conformal Coat.

I still do ecu's and basemaps all motor ones cause thats where majority of my experince is for a buddy of mine who does engine building for a living, so I do 2-3 a month. I have wanted to invest into a desoldering station but the 4 bucks for braid and the shack always calls me back.

Props to anyone that can spend a couple hours a day soldering. Funny cause I can spend hours porting and it really doesnt bother me but for most people they will have a loaded gun waiting.

I wasn't that young when I learned how, sometime in middle school. Every RC car I had always needed repair. Battery wires and motor wires would always break off from the factory. New soldering and some hot glue fixed all problems

My dad is a electrical engineer so I got taught young the basics. I miss my rc10. I built an awd civic back in high school thing was wicked fast but on any turn it would flip. Always used electrical motors the 17t was a killer on top end for sure.

I far prefer using a solder sucker to using braid. I spend about 6-8hrs a day soldering at the moment. But i'm an electronic engineer.

Main tips, use a good quality iron. Use a solder sucker, if the hole doesn't come clean or you end up with a little bit of solder left in the hole add more solder until it forms a decent sized dome, then heat it up and try again.

If the solder won't flow, use liquid flux (this ---- will make you cough your lungs up).

Takes me 20 mins to chip an ecu, i earn $60 for each chipping job i do. Plus IAB conversions earn me $50-100

For pre-chipped ecu's i use side cutters to cut through the legs, then tweezers to pull the pins from the heated solder. Takes another 5 mins max. Seriously, you struggle with crappy through hole components? I have to solder 0603 package surface mount in work.

Thanks, it's very nice to be able to do what I love on a day to day basis and for that I feel privileged.

Doing solder work is very calming to me. When I had my day job I could come home and sit there for a few hours and bang out a couple ECUs with the sucker and braid. Darkness turned into light when I bought my first desolder station, wow...what a difference. Cleaner and easier...for me it made sense. Probably close to 1000 ECUs now it well paid for itself, I actually bought a 2nd station a while back :)

I use the $10 dollar desoldering iron from radio shack it has a sucker ball on it like people use to suck snot out of babies noses. it works great it just gets to hot sometimes and you have to unplug it.
