Motorola (Freescale) 2.5 BAR and 4 BAR map sensor mods (56k....thumbnails)

Here are two mods for the commonly used Freescale 2.5 BAR MAP sensor and a newer 4 BAR MAP sensor.

First the 2.5 BAR.

An adpater made from 1/2" aluminum and a 90 degree 1/8 NPT to barb fitting was used so the source could be taken where the old MAP sensor was.

http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/2...l001hl3.th.jpghttp://img381.imageshack.us/img381/1...l002fg0.th.jpghttp://img381.imageshack.us/img381/6...l003nx1.th.jpghttp://img402.imageshack.us/img402/7...l004if8.th.jpg

This one is one that wasn't finished. JB-WELD action :6.

http://img250.imageshack.us/img250/5...l005we9.th.jpg

A firewall mounted honda MAP sensor donated its housing so that the stock harness would not have to tapped into or modified.

http://img358.imageshack.us/img358/4...l006il4.th.jpg http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/9...l007wz9.th.jpghttp://img264.imageshack.us/img264/5...l008zx9.th.jpg

2.5 BAR soldered, installed, and plastic epoxy was used to seal and secure the 2.5 BAR to the stock housing housing.

Installed and painted black for HMT stealthness.

Now to the 4 BAR.

Here it is. Just a WARNING to you all. The pin arrangement on this sensor is listed incorrectly everywhere on Freescale's website and PDF file. They list as SSOP, BUT it is not. The pin spacing is 0.050". SSOP uses a 0.025" spacing, so this is actually SOIC WIDE spacing. Only problem is that 8 pin SOIC WIDE is not a common pin arrangement. 8 pin SOIC NARROW is, but it won't line up at all. You could order a 16 pin SOIC WIDE adapter, but you would need to solder the sensor in the middle pins 3-6 and 11-15 and break off the ends since it won't fit in the stock MAP sensor housing.

http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/3...l001tx3.th.jpg

Stock MAP hollowed out and the sensor soldered.

http://img461.imageshack.us/img461/6...l003rd4.th.jpghttp://img454.imageshack.us/img454/4...l004wm9.th.jpghttp://img454.imageshack.us/img454/6...l005st4.th.jpg

All finished. The same plastic epxoy was used to fill in and seal the cover, since you would've had to cut the rivets that normally hold the cover down. Comparison of the size of the sensor.

Pinout for small MAP sensors

Here are the part #'s for the SOIC sensors. You can get these sensors from any Freescale distributor.

The two part numbers are the same sensor, it's just how they package them. "T1" is for Tape and Reels and "U" is for Rails.

That's a pic installed on my car now. The white epoxy was also painted black.
The wiring harness is long enough to mount it on the firewall using a longer hose of course. I might do that and use some black hex screws so they are less noticeable.

Thanks again Madmax. Now for a re-tune and more boost. :y

15-17 psi :6 You up for a little time on the dyno after the street tuning?

I'm curious on how this S trim wheel will perform.

The sensor is listed as 400kPa.

Take away 100kPa for vacuum and you are left with 300kPa = 44.1psi.

What was I smokin. What I meant was 3 BAR of positive pressure. So really it is a 4 BAR MAP sensor.

I'll correct the heading and thread.

You guys are killing me!

Welll...I have been hoping to keep this a secret until it was actually done but I have been working on this for a bit now and it looks like the cat needs to come out of the bag.

Molds are being designed as we speak to either replicate the STOCK Honda map sensor or the GM 3 Bar, I am only waiting on mold design & pricing at this point and I am getting ready to spend a significant amount on this project soon to make it happen...so quit STEALING from Freescale >:D

There will be some more boards ready soon for testers so Leed if you have a car running 30+ psi please let me know and I will send you one.

I am probably going to start selling this as an unenclosed kit here pretty soon once a bit more testing on cars has been done, all looks perfect thus far O0

I wont be past the 28psi on my car anytime soon, but Beau will be close enough.

There's always something special about pegging the last column on a 3bar :)

Well the Motorola 2.5 bar works great. We got done with a street tune tonight.
Dropped down to stock wg spring (10psi) and worked up slowly to 18 psi.
The boost controller is still working perfect. Holds the set psi straight across with no spikes.
Gotta jump on the dyno soon and get it to the track.

I'm suprised that nobody else really caught on when I mentioned the 3/4 and 7 bar map sensors in that 'other' locked thread. I was going to get a set for free before they caught on, just haven't bought any yet. These should be a very nice, as well as cheap, alternative to the GM map sensors, since the motorola/freescale sensors don't have a goofy vacuum issue. Kinda useless if you don't boost over 22psi, since you can sell your oem sensor for ~$15-20 on ebay.

THe one thing I'd suggest is a better way to put that little thing in the OEM map sensor. After digging to get the wires, the port on that thing can be glued to the where the tiny o-ring is inside the oem sensor case. Its the same size then, and you won't have to worry about any hose poping off a nipple, and can make it look exactly like stock. BTW the alternative to that adapter would be a plate the same thickness as a very common source of 1/8" aluminum - road signs! Buy a 1/8" NPT tap for $5-10 and you've got a nice plate to put a barbed fitting.

Re: Motorola (Freescale) 2.5 BAR and 4 BAR map sensor mods (56k....thumbnails)

wiring any of these is gona be cake for accord/preludes since the map sensor fits inside the black box without a problem.

There is no way the 6 pin 2.5 BAR case in there. Unless you mean the stock TB one. You don't need any hose. It fits right back on the TB and looks....stock. ;)

I had a 1/8 NPT already for doing LS/VTEC setups. Mike brought the aluminum, so it was pretty much free. The adapter is exactly what you are referring to, just 1/2" thick.

I was refering to the tiny sensor & the 1.75 tb-mounted version. I don't like obd0 or preludes >:D

Basicly I described the bottom of your post a bit better. You trasition from an opened/wired tb-mounted housing to the picture of the uncut housing and unwired sensor. You don't really have to dig all that crap out of the stock housing though. Done right, it looks bone stock, and functions just like stock.

I hope to suprise a few people here with it. I'll have this and use it with my 'special' turbo, a normal 50 trim T3 (.42/.48 stg 1 housings) except it has the housing/plate machined to accept the 57trim T4 compressor wheel. They'll be mistified when I have power like a high-boost hybrid, but have a T3 and functioning stock MAP...

so it just sits in there "free floating"? or is it glued down to something? what settings do you select in crome for the 4 bar? i dont see it listed

HiProfile 02-13-2007 01:04 AM

Re: Motorola (Freescale) 2.5 BAR and 4 BAR map sensor mods (56k....thumbnails)

You have to use Boost Tools to select custom sensor, then input the values. IIRC the 4bar is 200 to 4000 mbar, the 3bar is 200 to 3040 mbar, etc. Then you have to move the columns around & retune a bit, or at least I haven't played around enough to have it do it for me.

You could fit like 8 of those sensors in there. I think he just glued it on & refilled it with something. You can just epoxy the sensor's nipple to the hole, then refill the area you dug out behind it with caulk or epoxy, as long as you insulate the sensor leads first.

As for racepack's question, I made housings for the large, non-ported 2.5bar. Finished right before they re-introduced the ported versions. :3 But they also make a 2.5bar the size of that 4bar he posted and do the same. Same with the 3bar freescale makes. ;)

anyone know if freescale have pressure sensors that are oil\fuel resisted?

HiProfile 02-14-2007 07:47 PM

Re: Motorola (Freescale) 2.5 BAR and 4 BAR map sensor mods (56k....thumbnails)

Well all their sensors seem to be a sealed element w/in a epoxy resin case & internally coated with florosilicone. I looked that stuff up, and its resistant to hyrdalic fluid, but iono about gas/oil. I'd send them an email asking. The 7bar sensor above reads 102psi absolute, so ~88psi usable. Just enough for a honda's oil system.

Re: Motorola (Freescale) 2.5 BAR and 4 BAR map sensor mods (56k....thumbnails)

MADMAX, I've been stuffing Motorola 2.5 bar into OBD1/2 enclosures for a while now. Thanks for ruining my #1 method of taking money from high dollar riceboys at the streetraces - previously, they thought I was running a stock MAP "and could only be making xxx whp."

Well, it was a nice thing while it lasted. :'(
