If you can operate AutoCAD you can run most CAD/CAM software packages. They generate the code for you. It's been a decade since I programmed one, but back then you sometimes had to tweak a program for the peculiarities of a certain machine because lightly crashing a tool holder into a chuck easily equals a quick five figure repair bill. If the gear/software is of the last 5 years, without me actually knowing one way or the other, I'm going to say it's more user friendly and is somewhat idiotproofed.

Your best bet is to take night classes. A two year diploma program will typically have you on manual mills/lathes the first year and the CNC stuff the second year.

Everyone machinist I have known except one old school v8 head has struggled in the cashflow for many points of their lives. The field is cool but with more and more china parts its diffcult for companies to continue to stay in business

Im waiting for the old man who use to do my machine work to retire to buy all his old equipment. CNC and a creative/design style mind is a gold mine but most people lack that. Either way its a cool old school job w a new school twist.

Nope like I said I have been working for myself for awhile now and have no intent on using my business degree in the corporate world or working for another company. If I ever get enough money to my name and can buy a cnc machine outright I would but Im most likely going to buy a used bridgeport or hopefully find a nice cheap Berco Valve Guide & Seat Machine

i was trying to get into programing myself. i started taking a night class that had me using manual mills and lathes. i also got a job at a machine shop at the same time so i could put my schooling to use, but the company put all their eggs in one basket(BE aerospace/airbus) and they moved to england to be closer to airbus. the company i worked for couldnt get theor ---- together quick enough so they closed and i went to work on cars. i wish i was still doing it though. it was a lot of fun
