I just bought an exhaust and the guy first told me it was aluminized and then told me it was stainless. He will give me my money back if its not stainless so i decided to buy it. I figured i would jsut hit it with a magnet to see if its stainless but i guess that some stainless steels are magnetic. There is no surface rust or anything but it would be aluminized if its not stainless so there shouldnt be surface rust. How can i tell which it is?

 

Did you try a magnet yet?

 

I tried the magnet and there was a strong pull. I called kteller and they said they cant visually tell the difference between the pipes. I am doing a bit more research and it says that stainless steels are magnetic too.

 

300 series stainless is not magnetic. That would most likely be what kind of stainless they would use meaning its most likely mild steel.

 

Stainless can be slightly magnetic do to a low level of chromium in it but not a stong pull.

Doctor. I built the chest ------er, you know the one with the crank and gears one. Stainless, with some lead to make the machining easier, but harder on us welders. Some stainless is magnetic some is not.

Stainless can be magnetic expescially if you weld it, I get done welding manfolds they will pick up the steel shavings off the table, and you can feel a magnet pull it isnt strong but it is there, when it isnt welded the pull is weaker I guess something about the heat and high frequency aligning the atoms or something lol
