How can i tell if exhaust pipe is stainless?
Well i stopped being a lazy ****** and opened my engineering materials text book. 300 series stainless steels are not magnetic becuase that alloy is in the Austenitic region in which the atomic structure is Face Centered Cubic (FCC) at room temperature. The FCC structure is not magnetic. However, if an austenitic alloy is coldworked or deformed it can temporarily change to Body Centered Cubic (BCC) which is magnetic. But due to it being austenitic at room temperature is will return to its FCC structure over time. A standard carbon is magnetic until 727 degrees C where it too will enter the austenitic region and will not be magnetic until cooled. But if it is quenched quick enough and is trapped in its austenitic state then even mild steel will not be very magnetic. I had to read this ---- anyways because i have a final on thursday.
Basically my exhaust is either mild steel or non 300 series stainless. I called kteller and they said they only use 304 stainless for their exhausts.
Cliffs: Its mild steel.....I got fucked.....Paypal dispute has been filed.

The only way you can tell the exact material used is to. Cut a peice off and send it out to get tested. It will cost you some money but it is the only true way of telling what you have. I live in MN which has a ton of different steel companies, weld shops, machine shops, and different testing companies. Look them up and call them for what you need to do.

the piping is not.

The entire purpose of this guys post is almost lost. He was just trying to find out if his pipe was stainless...plain and simple. Oh and Engloid, your an idiot. Gravity is NOT a product of magnetism. Gravity relates to mass and matter. It's called einstein's theory of relativity.
