NISSAN GURU'S!!!! i need some help....
well i purchased a 240 from some lady in long beach... when i started it i heard a tapping noise coming from the valve cover but couldn't figure out what it was but she said she's been drivin it like that for a while now. i went ahead n purchased it thinkin it was jus a loose valve but i guess its not. got it down to a shop n the guy tells me its a loose chain tensioner? can anyone else confirm this problem with the 240's? if its loose can't i just adjust the tensioner. can anyone tell me where the tensioner is located... i kno a new tensioner is only like 200 for a new one but installation is ------ hell... any suggestions people? looking forward to boost on the new project but need to work out all the small bugs first.
Very common on the Ka24's.. the tensionars get weak and the chain starts slapping the guides. Sometimes for a quick fix you can remove the upper timing chain guide. But eventually you will need to replace the timing tensionar, chain and all the guides. I think they have aftermarket sets that cost around 200 bucks (which is way better than at the dealer) I've done a few of them, and honestly they are not fun, especially in altimas. The entire front of the engine needs to be removed (front timing cover) valve cover, oil pan etc etc.
Good luck,
Jeff

its mainly just to get rid of the noise, if the chain gets to loose it can start to cut grooves in the timing cover (yes I've seen some extreme cases).. if that happens you will need a new front cover and all new gears. I've known lots of people who hasnt fixed their loose timing chains and have been fine, but as far as modifing your car and beating the living ---- out of it, I honestly dont think it will last to long if you dont replace it.
