Default Intercooler Question

If I started to do a custom turbo project and run without an intercooler(lack of funds and still trying to find a good position for it), is it bad(maybe blown motor) to run without one or will I be ok? Do intercoolers add any HP at all or do they just keep cool?
Thanks for the help guys

intercoolers do both cool air and make hp. They do it by cooling the air before it hits your throttle body into the engine.
colder air = better charge = more hp

Its ok if you dont have one right off the bat, sometimes its one of the hardest componets to find in custom kits. Just run a real moderate boost level, and keep an eye on things. Detonation is just more prone to occur.
