I was just surfing Ebay looking for some new turn signal lights on my 89 CRX...and come up with an idea...

I could fabricate my WW front bumper to fit these JDM signals.


So how hard is working with urathane? I would say my fabrication skills are about Par (on a scale of 1-10 Id say I was about a 5.5-6)

I thought it would be pretty easy to use a grinder to widen the existing holes, then epoxy in some ABS plastic around it, then build up the contours with body filler.
about how well does everyone think this will work?

 

not trying to be negative, but...

a buddy of mine that did body work use to always talk about urethane bumpers. he would tell me that you REALLY shouldn't ---- with urethane, and that urethane and bondo are not a good combo. i don't remember why, but i do remember that it sounded like a good reason. any body work guys know why? sorry, i forgot the reason. if i were you i would leave your bumper alone. is it really worth messing up your nice urethane bumper for some cheap ebay lights?

 

Its the oils that the urathane has. Itcan be dine but it will be a pain.

 

Yeah not only what onyx said but the flexibility of urathane because a problem too.... fiberglass sillers and bondo do not like that.

Basically if you want to mess with it buy figerglass, if you like it the way it is.. urethane

 

If you DO end up working with urethane, use an epoxy based filler, (epoxy and some chop strand, it'll stick better, but it still won't be perfect. I consider myself very skilled with composites (probably a 9 out of 10) and I wouldn;t take on that project. If you really want it done, i'd just make a new bumper and account for the lights in the mold. But then it'd be glass instad of urethane.

 

Thanks for the input, I decided on not doing it I looked hard at my bumper and decided to just keep it simple.

Thats the ugliest front end I have EVER seen on a CRX, that includes the plywood body kit

 

Well it's a hatch, but yes, FUGLY
