Z6 cam gear on Y8 fix timing issue?
okay i got a friend that just built his D16y8 for boost and i was tellign him about the pain in the *** the timing was when i had mine. i know there has been advances in the p2p timing maps over the past few years but i was wonderign if it would be easier/possible to just use and z6 cam gear and timing belt so he won't have to worry about that.
he's shooting for 400hp at whatever amount of boost it takes to get him there lol.

Re: Z6 cam gear on Y8 fix timing issue?
If you put a Z6 cam gear on a Y8, the motor will be mechanically out of time.
If you do an OBD1 conversion on a Y8, you will not find 12 degrees base timing with the distributor anywhere remotely near center. This is not a problem, stop making something out of nothing over it.
P2P maps are minimum allowed timing maps, they are most certainly NOT the timing maps you run when OBD1 converted. Take Z6 mappings for NA, set your ignition timing for 10-12 degrees at 10 psi. This will make a decent basemap to tune from, and the engine will likely want more timing in the lower and midrange RPMs, but don't ---- with it until you get it on a dyno.

Re: Z6 cam gear on Y8 fix timing issue?
Yeah, I deleted it due to excessive whining. It took me two afternoons and $100 in dyno time to figure out what was going on, and I've never owned a Y8; I was sick of 11 pages of excuses and people who couldn't be spoonfed enough.
