honda cranks should never be turned. Spun bearing on a crank its junk unless its a little glaze which this is not

it belongs with your leftover taco bell

Anything D series is dirt cheap, pick up a short block or even a whole motor. You can probably get a low mileage motor for 3 or 4 bills and be done with it.

Because they are nitride coated from the factory and spin balanced to 10k rpm's. Any machining done to the crank removes the coating and weakens the crank. D-series cranks are a dime a dozen anyway, easier and cheaper usually to buy a new one. Also never re-use the spun rods...the heat fatigues the metal and makes them weaker i.e more prone to stretching and snapping.

How much would it weaken it? I mean if he is just going to put the motor back together and not boost or anything, would it be alright to say, turn the crank and use some used pistons and rods with fresh rings and bearings?

Honda cranks can be turned down, re nitritedm the finished machined to proper OEM specs.

But the whole process is not cheap, it's cheaper just to find another useable crank.

But seeing a $4,000 crankshaft glow is awesome in itself.

I promise that you can not find a low mileage D for 300 bucks. I thought that too untill i needed one then i realized that the only low mileage motors were the popular B swaps and ---- liek that. Cheapest d i found was a ZC for 900 with 80K on it already. I found nothing in the Tidewater Va area better than 800 for around 70K-100K motor no tranny. Who's to say that it wont smoke it 5K with that much miles? I bought the car from the second owner at like 55K so i know this car has been taken care until now at 120K, it wont smoke. I rebuilt it for 400 and im gonna roll on the stock rods per advice of an engine builder. it wont see boost but i think it will be fine for 100hp daily driving, I have to get my daily back and cant afford to build the block. so I am kind of fucked as far as turbos and this car goes. Until I secure a second ride, i cant take the chance of an unstable ride again.

I have been told that turning it was a bad idea cause then you gotta deal with oversize bearings and all that ----. If i go new crank route then what teh ---- is there to plastigauge? Stock specs? crank is in just gotta go get me a new oil pan gasket and some RTV ----

You are correct Bone. I figured it wouldn't be worth the mention of having them re-nitrided though because of cost factors.

OP: Why not just post a want add for another crank? Between here and H-T there are thousands. I'm sure someone has a good crank laying around that would suit your needs.
