why does the h22a vtec have more power than h23a (with specs)

why does the h22a vtec have more power than h23a (with specs)
i have the specs but dont know why can someone explain heres the specs
h22a h23a
bore stroke 87.0 x 90.7 mm 87.0 x 95.0 mm
displacement 2157 cc 2259 cc
compression ratio 10.0:1 9.8:1
hp 190@6800 rpm 160 @ 5800 rpm
torque 158lbs/ft @ 5500 rpm 156 @ 5300 rpm
red line 7500 rpm 6500 rpm
vtec has varaible timing and lift
where does the other power come from ?

im sorry but i dont really know what vtec does all i know is that it makes the valves open a litlle bit more what does it do ?
