How much timing were you running, Jon? Did it ever occur to you that the added mechanical clamping action helped with bore shift from detonation... meaning you were still detonating? Ever free up any ring lands?
I've had good luck in the 240 whp range with stock Z6, zero head gasket problems.
Listen to Foowee about thermostats... you need dwell time for the coolant to heat up and cool down, and you need pressure, in order for a cooling system to do a good job.

ill check my timing, but i dont have my map saved anywhere so ill have to find someone with a chip reader. but why would it just start now if its timing and ive been running it hard for a year now? and it will still overheat withought boosting it, like driving on the freeway in 5th, but staying out of boost.
