Default Oil burning question

I got another question here, now when your motor's burning oil (didn't take very long to get nice and black) is that because the rings are bad? I talked about this to two of my buddies and they both told me something different.

Also would a bad gasket play a role? Cause I'm pretty sure that my gasket between my valve cover and head is bad.

Also you know how you can tell something about the motor by the color smoke it farts out, what exactly do they mean? Again talked to a few different folk and they tell me something different.
White smoke= ?
Black smoke= ?
Bluish smoke (is this also the same as white?)= ?

All help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

the best thing to do is a leak down test. it'll show you which cylinder is leaking and if your seals are ok. bad head gasket will pressurize the cooling system and you'll notice your coolant turning brown due to oil mixing in. white to my knowledge is when the compression rings are getting bad and you're losing compression. blue is where your oil rings go out and leak oil from the rings through to the combustion chamber. and YES, the color of the "fart" will tell you a lot about the motor condition. good luck

White smoke= Normally Burning Coolant
Black smoke= Over Fueling
Bluish smoke= Oil burning

Doing a leak down test wont show you if your valve stems are leaking though, but they will tell you how much leak down your rings are leaking buy.

A valve cover gasket wont make a difference..

Oh okay, I'm make sure I jot down them smoke stuff. But now my question is this, cause my car blows out black smoke, but not constantly, pretty much only at high rpms, so what do you think the problem might be? And the motor eats up oil, turned black in no time. I know that the valve cover gasket is leaky, but I don't think it's gonna make it leak half the dip stick.

eat's up oil as in burns it? or just turns black fast?

What type of fuel management are you running? ECU/injectors? etc..

Well, Let's see, a while ago, I changed my oil, about two months later and no where near 3000 miles later (drove it maybe about 1000 miles), the oil was nice and dark. My other car, 1000 miles later it's still looks like caramel. I'm pretty sure it eats up some oil, cause I had to add some oil here and there (don't drive it much anymore but I'm pretty sure I've add more than a quart). I don't quite get it, a friend of mine, says that my rings are getting bad? The car doesn't idle smoothly, jerks some here and there every some odd seconds. The car does run relatively smooth, except when I floor it. I could recall that when I'm driving at a fairly low speed, it lags a little then jumps (I'm not sure about top end, haven't driven it hard for about 3 months, just barely drve it one in a while). Does this info help out a little?

About the fuel management, ecu, and injectors. I'm pretty sure it's the Si ecu, I'm fairly certain that they are stock injectors (MPFI), fuel management, I have no idea, stock most likely. There is a resistor box there. Could it be bad injectors?

Thanks
