NSFW tps questions NSFW tranny issues please check the thread if you haven't yet
first things first
IF ANYONE SAYS TAKE IT TO THE DEALER, **** WILL NOT BE POSTED.
**** will be posted after answers tonight unless someone says to go to the dealer. been there done that. they won't touch the car without us paying for an inspection. the tps is only $35 at autozone so i'd rather do it my self then go to the dealer
back story:
mom has an 02 hyundai accent 1.6dohc with an automatic tranny.
2 weeks ago tranny started acting weird, it would down shift really hard and sometimes while getting on the freeway it wouldn't upshift into the final gear. you would have to let the throttle off to get it to upshift.
last night my mom called and said the cel came on.
code 0121 (tps)
so i checked the tps and i got the following readings
closed .42
open 4.25
i know that is off and i tried to adjust it, but that is as close as i could get it.
i looked online and found out that a bad tps could cause problems with the tranny.
2 questions
1. is the tps bad or is that close enough?
2. could this be why the tranny is acting up?

yeah i did a full sweep and it went pretty smooth. didn't see any problems with that.
i did another search on google and found someone that had this problem and it was the maf that was bad. some how it threw the code for the tps.
also i saw a few people saying that the tps on this gen accent had a lot of issues.

vacuum/airmass changes, engine sees a different load via the sensor and relays that to the trans puter.
replace the tps, if it doesn't fix, return it by not over-tightening the screws, or clean the old one up really well
you never said how it runs. good? kinda lumpy with sporadic milage?

I'd clean the MAF sensor first before buying a new TPS.

Hope that helps.
If you have a good OBD-2 scanner that gives you sensor values while on the vehicle works great. I use a cheap as Auto X-ray scanner set for manufacture specific (ie. toyota obd-2, or hyundia obd-2) instead of obd-2 generic. I you have access to this type of scanner it will even give you the MAF readings lbs/min great for figuring out parameters for F.I. setup.
