i think your problem is that you didnt plastiguage them. They arent that hard to use at all. You go to a auto part store and buy a plastiguage. They shouldnt be that much. If the bearings are not within spec. It will cause a loud knock in your engine. And it doesnt take that much time to plastiguage them. Any lost of power? When you disassemble the block, it's fairly obvious if you've spun a bearing because that journal will look kind of scratched or smeared. You spent 4 days working on it. Why not take another 15 mins to plastiguage them?

The knocking sound I experienced when I spun a rod was loud and constant, regardless of whether I was revving the motor or not. I was out in the middle of nowhere when it happened, so I had to drive 5-10 miles before I could shut her off. I didn't rev it above 3000 rpm, because it sounded like it was going to blow up. Luckily it spun the outside, and so the crank was not scratched up. If the load on the bearing surface (from the cumbustion/power stroke and inertia) exceeds the oil pressure on the bearing surface, you are going to start wearing the bearings. mine were paper thin when I pulled them out. The best way to check is when the engine is cold quickly *blip* the throttle so the rpms go up to about 2500 and as they descend listen for an accentuated *rattle or knock*. If you suspect this, with the engine idling, go to your spark plug wires and pull them off out one at a time if the noise goes away after pulling a spark plug wire then you know which cylinder is guilty.

If none of this applies to you then you probably don't have a bad bearing.

But if you do have a bad bearing, there is a possability that you can just replace the bearing without having to regrind/replace the journal. But of course you have to check the tolerances on the journal. If the journal needs to be lathed or replaced, you have a rebuild on your hands. If the journal is fine, you can (in certain cases) get away with just replacing the bearings.

Before you do anything else. Dont start the car. You might make things worst. Drop the oil pan and see if your crankshaft is scratch or scruffed. If the crank is scratched or scruffed take it to a machine shop and get it micropolished. Or buy another crankshaft. I recommend replacing the rod/main bearings. But before you installed them again. PLASTIGUAGE THEM!!! They arent hard to do. Not sure if UK sells any helms manual. If not then check this link out. https://www.homemadeturbo.com/forum/...?topic=10912.0

arent the rod barings color matched? sounds like u didnt do it right, but if its only when the clutch is in then maybe its the throw out baring or somthin in the trani, idk, spring, somthin broke, but it could be valvetrain noise, like valve chatter, rod knock , spun rod, and some other ----. idk, but sounds like somthin maybe within the trani if its only wiht the clutch in/?

Hi guys

i dont think its tranny, i just meant that its easier to hear when stationery and the clutch is pressed in. The bearing that comes with a clutch kit (sorry, dont know its name) is noisey too.

you can hear it while driving too but only when revving between 2500 to 2500 ish. It doesnt happen at idle and i am losing absolutely no power or oil. I tried that whole pulling out the plugs thing an drevving to see if the noise went and it didnt. No difference on any cylinder.

I have yet to go round the engine with a stethascope but from what i can tell its definately the block somewhere. Only cos i can feel it through the bulkhead and i dont imagine valvetrain would do that.

None of the bearings were spun......just lightly worn.

All bearings sitting perfect under caps and no scores underneath.

Me changing the bearings hasnt changed the noise at all (not even worse) making me think that it aint bearings.

better watch it though if you beat the **** out of it and throw a rod and tap the head with a piston and wreck that too. Just buy a shortblock and take a loss on the bearings.

i hear what you are saying bro........surely she wouldnt throw a rod with new bearings even though i didnt size em.........errrr scary.

checked the valve clearances AGAIN......spot on.

still knocking.........making me sick man.

car still drives very very well.........just a wee touch ruff.

did i miss any bearings that would make this noise.........i replaced the 5 crank journals........4 rod ends.........didnt do the thrust washer as it didnt look too bad.....a wee bit scuffed.

dang............pissin me off

You are asking for trouble if you dont plastiguage them like what i said before. It can be new bearings, but if it is not within spec. You will continue to encounter the knocking sound.
