ok

1990 D16A9
only mods are K&N and Remus exhaust
93000 miles

Driven hard and serviced well.

When i rev the motor up on say, part throttle. At about 2500 - 3000 revs i can hear a knocking from the engine. I cant say where cos when i go to the bay its so darn noisey. I know i can feel this coming through the bulkhead. Its not drivetrain as it happens when the clutch is in and im stationery.

I threw the head up and ripped it apart at the weekend. Dropped the sump, removed and replaced the rod big ends with standard size aftermarket ones as there was no damage, only wear.

I then removed the crank mains and replaced them with standards too as although there was wear, there was no damage.

I left the original thrust washer, it wasn't too badly worn at all and i didnt think it would be responsible for this noise.

When i was rebuilding, i lost the order of the rocker arms and when i was setting the valve lash, i couldnt get the feeler under any of the lobes on no's 2 and 3 cylinder when they were at TDC. I had to set the clearances on the very back of the cam (opposite to lobe). It runs and its relatively quiet so i guess this is ok, just more work i suppose.

back to the problem.

I took it out for a wee run today and still the knock is there. I disconnected the alternator as i thought perhaps a bearing was gone there. No good.

I can also now hear nosies coming from the dizzy when the motor is running, i looked inside and there is nothing unusual......these noises are not constant, very random. Still runs good though.

I have a few final ideas, a few of them i will not due due to finances. My worst case scenario would be piston slap or wrist pin problems. Is this a likely problem? How do i tell?

I had also considered that the water pump was duff as it made a groaning noise when i turned it by hand without the belt, there is no resistance though and it is not a grinding noise, a rubbery groan.

Perhaps the oil pump? i have never ever seen the oil light stay on though.

Is there anything i am missing here gang, this car was seriously quick before i split it. No smoke or oil loss at all. Just not nice noises.

Help

hi knight,

no there were no metal shavings in the oil at all......one of the crank mains was down to brass on one side. Thats all.

hi whiterice,

i didnt spec any bearings.......i was only able to get standard ones and honda really do take the **** over here in belfast.

noise hasnt got any better or worse for the new bearings though. Its probably more noticeable now as the engine seems to have gotten less rough with the new bearings.

what sort of damage could the wrist pin do?.....i really need this right now as my daily driver.......

thanks for the advice guys

You NEED to platicguage the bearings when you replace them. The bearings and surfaces wear, so new bearings won't fix anything unless you are very lucky with the size they supplied.

Did you notice any strange marks on the cylinders when you had everything apart, any signs of wear?

Your laziness may have been a waste of time.

awww guys, dont be so down on me..............for a start, you have no idea how hard it is to get **** like that done over here.

i read an article and asked 4 garages if the could do the whole plastigague thing for me...........they just stared and said what?

its ok for you guys over there. i was quoted 1200 uk pounds for new bottom end bearings fitted....that was the cheapest. The car is worth about 800 over here. Why would i pay that?

i just wanted to get a bit more life outta it.

i aint lazy...........i spent 4 days working on it. i just cant spend a freaking dumb amount of money on it ok...............

thanks for the effort

if it's only worth 800 over there, don't ------- worry about it. if it runs, run it till it dies, then either sell it for like 500, or swap another one in and have fun. if it ain't broke, don't fix it. but as for your problem, maybe piston slap?
