new pistons on 10psi?
Ok, I have a simple question.
I put a fresh rebuild in my car 3 weeks ago (d16a6 bottom end)... and it broke a ring land yesterday while attempting to tune it at the dyno. (tune was A+, but mechanics failed).
10psi on t25
d16a6 block
d16y8 head
Anyway, Now im stuck wondering if I should just swap this other bottom end in, or spend some $$ and upgrade the pistons. (I really don't know if I can afford pistons AND rods right now, and not sure JUST pistons are worth the extra time/$$)
I was looking into something like this..
http://cgi.ebay.com/Vitara-Turbo-Pis...QQcmdZViewItem
Also, if I do decide to run more booster later 12-15lbs, now my rods are my weekest link. IDUNNO!!

Re: new pistons on 10psi?
how is a ringland a mechanical failure? it's not like it has a torque spec, unless you think it had a manufacturing defect, but that seems like a stretch. I'd look for another culprit such as a bad injector that wasn't flowing the proper ammount of fuel or something else.

Re: new pistons on 10psi?
looks like it had poor oiling, did u spec the oil pump?
also maybe u couldnt suple enuff oil with the turbo and all and that was it.
my fresh built(not rebuild) did the same ---- because teh oil pickup got cloged and then that was it

I had thought about the injectors... but the plugs looked pristine when we pulled them.
Also, if it was oil pump, i'd assume a bearing to go before a piston would...
Anyway, Idunno.
I ordered oversize vitara pistona, and now debating whether i can budget rods. We'll see.

there was no detonation. This was preignition.
A bit of oil build up on the corner of the piston caught on fire and combustion temps rose until the burn started consuming the metal in the combustion reaction - this is what happens when you sunder the bonds of the wet steam formed in the combustion reaction and maintain temps that don't allow free oxygen and hydrogen to combine; instead it seeks out aluminum (and to a lesser extent steel) to combine with.
