Lol that's the only thing that's kept me from ripping mine apart. I've done a few old-school VW and porsche tranny's, maybe I'll give mine a shot after I find another decent S1 or YS1.

I just walked a buddy thru a tranny, he'd never opened one before.

stop and ask questions before you mess it up.

he had the input shaft bearing thrust washer backwards alng with the reverse idler gear.

ALWAYS replace the ISB when I'm working on someone else's tranny.

The rest I inspect, all TWELVE of them.

Depends on the condition of the tranny when I open it. Nice and clean, typical amount of metal syrup on the magnetics, I just replace the ISB and seal then seal it back up.

If it's been burnt from running low on fluid, or wrong fluid like gear oil, I've been known to junk a tranny because it's not worth fixing.

LSD install for example, your replacing three of the seven large bearings.

Or just replace them all.. and check synchro's and if they MIGHT maybe, be not so good.. replace those too.. oh, and dont forget to add that OBX.

Could you not find another trans at a junker, take it apart and get the gears out of it and then swap them into yours? You'd also have some spare parts just in case something else happens again? Could be a route to go.

Thanks for the reply. You need to organize a tranny re-building seminar.

I tried at a Niagra CRX meet. The guy bringing the tranny flaked out, everyone was pissed.

Didn't matter to me, left more time to drink beer!
