Default H22 Hybrid Rebuild Discussion

Hey all,

So I am building an H22 VTEC Head/H23A1 bottom end hybrid for my crx. I have been doing a bit of reseach and just wnat to run by some parts etc and see what people's opinions of them are.

From what I understand I will need these from the H22:

timing belt, water pump, tensioner, lower/inner most crankshaft pulley, TB, sparks, ecu, injectors, dizzy, vtec controller.

On thing I am not sure of is which crank to use, I know a forged one would be best but they are expensive as hell so should I go with the H22 or H23?

Machine Work:

pnp, 3 way valve on the head, sleeve job on the block, micro...?

After marke shiz:

Crower cam shafts (which cam gears?)
Arias Pistons (with skirt/top coating by Swain tech.)
Supertech valves, springs, and retainers
Eagle Rods
Darton MID Sleeves (with cometic head gasket)

Shiz I am not sure about:

injectors, bearings, studs, fuel rail, thrust washers, header, intake.

I am planning on building the motor for NA, at least until I can afford to boost it because this is one expensive *** rebuild. Thanks in advance for the advice.

intake,

If you go with the H22 crank you will have a complete h22, just housed in a h23 block-everything else is the same, might as well just buy an H22 as the sleeves are still frm in the H23 and you said you're sleeving it anyway.
If you go with the H23 crank i believe you will have a harder time getting correct rods and pistons. Also should get it balanced cause if JD is correct, only the 22 came balanced from the factory. Some F22 cranks are identicle to the H23 if it broadens your search for a crank.

You looking for good aftermarket advise or which motor to use parts from?

Okay I understand what you're saying about the crank, good advice, I will get an H22 crank most likely. There are two reasons why I didn't just buy an H22 longblock: 1. I found an H23A1 long block for $200, and 2. according to the articles I found using the H23A1 block I will get more torque.

Either or depending on what would work the best.

That added torque comes from using the longer stroke (95mm) H23 crank over the H22's 90.7mm. Swapping to an H22 crank will make the engine perform just like a factory h22.

For all the other stuff, anything that bolts to the head: studs, intake, exhaust, you need from the H22. The bearings and Thrust washer can be H22 or H23 and even some F series ones are the same. If your long block is complete though, just leave it alone and put the head on. Worry about sleeving it after the sleeves get damaged. You'll have enough time/money just getting that thing in your crx as it is.

Edit: But if you do decide to use an H22 crank, send me your H23 mine got Fucked.

Okay thanks again. So why do so many people tell me the H23 crank is weaka nd will fail at higher rpms? It sound slike if I want a hybrid with higher torqu that will not fail when boosted I have to go with a forged H23 crank. I'm not worried about time, because my crx isn't eben running right now and I a m still doing body repairs to it etc...

Anyway for the other stuff, can anyone suggest better after market versions of the injectors, bearings, studs, fuel rail, thrust washers, header, intake that may be worth while? I guess that is what info I am looking for.

PS: I'll definitely not be keeping the H23 head in any case.

The longer stroke gives a worse Rod/stroke ratio that puts more sideload on the sleeves and has faster piston speeds for the same rpm. Some people swear it matters while others swear it's bull ---- and just get the factory h23 crank balanced. It's the same debate that goes on over and over about the LS/Vtec vs. straight gsr, yet plenty of people rock the ls.

It was the crank i was interested in, but for what people want for H22 cranks you should keep the h23. And I have no Idea what an aftermarket forged one would go for but I don't think I want to know,

That's almost 5 times what I have in my complete F22/H22. The only reason I could see getting that is if the entire engine was built to the same standards of quality. There's no way I could justify spending that kind of money on a FWD car, ---- any car. I'd be too afraid to get on it.

I'm a cheap bastard though, good luck :P
