Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
you could put a check valve in if you're turbo to prevent boost from getting into the can

Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
My buddy's chrysler keeps blowing out a seal (I think the camshaft seal in front), he's having circulation problems, I would definately tell everyone to own an oil catch can.. hell throw out the charcoal canister (don't need that ----) and put it there, or relocate the battery and put it in that spot

Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
what will you do about gas tank vapors without the charcoal can? your gas tank could expand and cause problems without the charcoal canister.

;D ;D
Dawson, are u talking about an actual oil catch can like all the track cars use to prevent oil from dumping on the track? Because the way your post reads it sounds like u want to know about the Greddy style of catch can with a sight glass on it. This type is an oil separation tank that goes inline between the valve cover and the intake piping. I have one,the idea is the tank separates the oil and moisture from the evacuated air(and blowby gas) It prevents carbon and oily sludge from building up in your turbo, intercooler and charge pipes.you know what i mean if you have ever taken an intercooler off at the wreckers and filled you ear and shirt pockets full of oily crap from ten years of collecting in it |
Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
Are you sure? Too many people use too many friggin names for this thing. If this is what you are talking about...Look at the diagram below, convienently stolen from xenocron's site.
http://www.-------------/carpics/vacuumlines.jpg The Valve cover breather tube that connects to the Intake just draws fresh air into the head right? So there, you would put a breather. The PCV Valve, (positive crankcase ventilation) located on the back of your block, gets oil/air mixture sucked out of it into your intake Manifold when you get blowby (positive pressure into your crankcase below pistons, hence PCV). You put a breather on the valve cover since it just sucks in air anyway, and connect a hose from the PCV to the catch can, then another from the catch can to a constant VAC source, like inbetween the turbo and air filter...right? or am i completely off? |

Tim's Tech Tip #433: The oil vapors in the intake air lowers the octane of gas.
