do i really need/want a oil catch can
i was looking into it with since i am going turbo i don't want that oil going through my i/c. Where i come from (teamintegra) they swear you need a vacuum sorce hooked up to the valve cover. What do you guys think?

Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
ok.Firts off teams are gay.
You dont need one but I now would sugest one.Ill be getting one soon couse Im starting to notice a little bit of oil in the intake pipe. |
Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
just route a hose from the valve cover down behind the block. Drain that ---- into the street. ;)
|
Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
well its not really a team...its what the website is called (teamintegra.net) They swear you need some kind of vacuum to pull some of those vapors out. I wanted to others opinions.

Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
that's not a drain.. it's a fresh air tube for your crank case.
the drain is the PCV valve on the back of the block. |
Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
If you plan on taking it to the track they will require you to have a catch can. They're cheap to make and easy to install.

Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
where do these mofuckers go? where that black can is already on the back of my block?
|
Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
taht black can that hangs off the firewall is the charcol canister and the black thing off the back of the block is the oil breather that needs to go to a catch can as well.

Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
U don't need 1, but if you race your car, I would recomend 1. U also need to hook it up in some way where the intake has a vacume to pull the air through. That way it works better. If u have a turbo then you can route it to a brather filter or just let the other open. 98ctr
PS: the old one has a verry good diagram on his web site. |

Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
you could put a check valve in if you're turbo to prevent boost from getting into the can
|
Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
My buddy's chrysler keeps blowing out a seal (I think the camshaft seal in front), he's having circulation problems, I would definately tell everyone to own an oil catch can.. hell throw out the charcoal canister (don't need that ----) and put it there, or relocate the battery and put it in that spot
|
Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
what will you do about gas tank vapors without the charcoal can? your gas tank could expand and cause problems without the charcoal canister.

Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
;D ;D
Dawson, are u talking about an actual oil catch can like all the track cars use to prevent oil from dumping on the track? Because the way your post reads it sounds like u want to know about the Greddy style of catch can with a sight glass on it. This type is an oil separation tank that goes inline between the valve cover and the intake piping. I have one,the idea is the tank separates the oil and moisture from the evacuated air(and blowby gas) It prevents carbon and oily sludge from building up in your turbo, intercooler and charge pipes.you know what i mean if you have ever taken an intercooler off at the wreckers and filled you ear and shirt pockets full of oily crap from ten years of collecting in it |
Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
Are you sure? Too many people use too many friggin names for this thing. If this is what you are talking about...Look at the diagram below, convienently stolen from xenocron's site.
http://www.-------------/carpics/vacuumlines.jpg The Valve cover breather tube that connects to the Intake just draws fresh air into the head right? So there, you would put a breather. The PCV Valve, (positive crankcase ventilation) located on the back of your block, gets oil/air mixture sucked out of it into your intake Manifold when you get blowby (positive pressure into your crankcase below pistons, hence PCV). You put a breather on the valve cover since it just sucks in air anyway, and connect a hose from the PCV to the catch can, then another from the catch can to a constant VAC source, like inbetween the turbo and air filter...right? or am i completely off? |
Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
you're doin good son, keep it up.

Hey, anyone have any diagrams for a DIY oil catch can? I would goto google and search, but I'm lazy. |
Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
DIY catch can????
u need two vaccuum hoses and a chef boyardee can and u got urself a catch can |
Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
Tim's Tech Tip #433: The oil vapors in the intake air lowers the octane of gas.

Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
i'm making one with hoses from my old refridgerator, a little puffy soap thingie stolen from my girlfriend, and a metal bottle from those "elements" drinks. I'll post a writeup in a few days.

Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
I made mine from a round peice of tin and a can of WD-40 with the top chopped off. I fiber glassed two fittings in the top where the tin is, then I fiberglassed another fitting into the bottom of the can.
After I spray painted the can black, I twisted some tape around it, then painted in red. Then removed the tape and now it looks like a barber shop pole !! Sweet, hehe. One fitting on the top on the can goes to the valve cover breather. The other fitting on the top goes to a vaccum source on the air filter/intake side of the turbo. The last fitting on the bottom of the can runs to a lower, but easy place to drain the oil ( so I never have to take the can out. As the oil and air enter the can the oil will be pulled downward into the bottom of the can as air will pass into the intake of the turbo without any oil. This is about the only way to get a constant vaccum on the valve cover, without sucking up oil/oil vapor. |
Re:do i really need/want a oil catch can
Kick ass, I will surely make a few of them (once I have definate direction in where to go). Yeah I'll make a writeup, probably use raw materials and weld everything up too.
Thanks for the info guys. |
