Default d16z6 replaced by d16y7,8?

I have a 93 del sol si T w/ a d16z6. I wasn't planning on doing anything, but I was wondering if any other d series motor would be able to be swaped in using the existing motor mounts and etc. Also, would a d16y7 or y8, not sure wich one, swap in without any changes being made? The only reason im asking is because im convinced that my bottem end is gona go, again, for the third time, and i have a friend with a d16y7 or 8, with under 50k miles on it and i can get it for like 400 bucks, w tranny/ecu. Im not saying im going to do this or anything, but im just wondering what kinds of swaps I can do for cheap. Also, would a d16z6 exhaust manifold bolt up to a d16y7 or 8? What accomadations, if any, would I have to make for this to work in my sol? Any comments/information would be greatly apreciated. THanks

you can swap either motor in your and it will fit physically. if you wer to swap a y7 (SOHC NON_VTEC) motor in there you are looking at having to usea diffrent ECU. The Y7 motor is an OBD 2 motor where as you haean OBD 1 car. The wireing would be a pain to wire up the 2nd o2 and changethe IACV wireing and buy the conversion harness for an OBD1 to OBD 2. If anything take the Y7 and slap your Z6 top end (head intake andexaust manifold) and make it a mini-me. Its proberly better to keep your Z6 tranny for the ratios are better. IF the motor is a Y8(SOHC VTEC) then it will be a direct swap and you would use your exsisting ECU. Either way you will hae to keep your exsisting D16Z6 fuel rail for the plugs changed in the 96+ modles.

Thanks, that helps me a lot. Do you know if the exhaust manifold is the same? Would this be an easy swap for it being my first swap? What diferences might i see in the motors. Thanks.

first off the y7 has a weird exaust manifold that has the cat built into it, second the D16Z6 header will still fit any of the motors. I would do the y7 with the z6 top end. and keep all the wireing and what not the same. That would be far easier than trying to get a y7 to work right in an OBD 1 car.

But the d16y8 is pretty much a "direct replacement" for my d16z6 with no modifications being needed?
