Honestly I'd say save for an LS swap and then either way you go NA or Boost you are ready if you want to go NA build the bottom and throw a B16 head on and have a mad tyte JDM LS/Vtec...or build it and boost the hell out of it, or just boost it stock and make 300hp

2.0+ liters if you insist on high dollar low yield NA faggotry. Rob's old bottom end, 85.5X92mm, Carillo A-beams and Eagle crank, can be had for $2200 or you might talk the guy down a bit, needs ringed.
That's pretty much how you have to spend your money if you want a NA Honduh that's faster than a stock D16 with a T3...

All these motors are great platforms to start anything with. WE ALL have seen great dyno numbers and 1/4 times from all setups...from B's to D's. The difference is how deep your pockets are. You don't want to spend 4k...and thats fine. 1-2k WILL get you a pretty decent setup. But as you're wondering around for the best motor.......don't forget to look under your hood. Why not start with that guy? Its already there. Some people are so quick to jump onto something else when what they have is already good. Alot of time...its what the motor AND the driver can do. IMO..bang for the buck, stock whatever you have and NOS is the way to go. Poor mans turbo! But thats a "im ------ broke with no job" setup. Your motor, some fuel management, and a turbo set "HMT style" would be great fun and not too bad on the bank account. Gl with your path down the FI road.

---- that learning ----, turbo d-series is fun and all (my car has been aswesome), but starting out on a better platform will save you money in the end. I see nothing wrong with starting off with a NA B16, yes it's slow compared to a turbo d, very slow lol, but after you slap a turbo kit on their the mighty d-series won't stand a chance. I'd also suggest while your driving around in the slow NA B16 to start building a nice 1.8/2.0L block to slap in there when your ready for big boost.
As a matter of fact, that's exactly the plan I have for my car.

JD will tell you that vtec is gay and LS is the way to go, but I like the powerband on the vtec motors better, plus you will like the tranny a lot better. Shorter gears are better for acceleration, the LS tranny is way too long, especially if your reving high. I hate the long gears on my d-series, but I don't have many options like you b-seruies guys.
