cracked sleeve in D-series...whos got pics?

seriously, i have never seen a cracked sleeve D-series. i have seen more B-series than i can count.

anyone here have pics of a unsupported (no blockgaurd, filled, posted, etc) D-series block that has cracked a sleeve from detonation?

I have only thrown rods with d series motors

Never seen one either.

everyone seems to be afraid of cracking sleeves in a D-series. yet no one cracks them?!?!... i know a person that cracked a D block, but not entirely sure it was just from detonation.

Re: cracked sleeve in D-series...whos got pics?

A buddy and I were discussing this awhile back and we cant think of anyone we know who cracked a sleeve. Tons of people with broken ringlands and rods saying goodbye to the cylinder but no cracked ones. Transmissions are the major issue imo. The old cable L3's break at pretty low power. Hydro b series transmission w/ spool=9 sec transmission.

Re: cracked sleeve in D-series...whos got pics?

still thinking on this, and yeah the tranny is an issue also. throw an OBX in there, hope for good? lol... maybe newer hydro EK/EX tranny? idk

Re: cracked sleeve in D-series...whos got pics?

b series transmission on the d motor. A guy did that out in southern california years ago I think a dude did it on ht too.

WEll we can follow bisi who is using the 86-89 integra. I have yet to crack one open but Im assuming he uses them for a reason

Of course now for newer chassis you have to make mounts and convert to a cable set up in the 92+civic

From what I hear and I'm sure you know they supposedly use a b16 diff.

Guy-Fast 11-24-2008 07:44 PM

Re: cracked sleeve in D-series...whos got pics?

Yup but could be internet chatter which is always iffy. I know Bisi uses them but what is done to them isnt going to be known thats for sure

75 buck transmission that can hold power to run 9's does sound nice though

more good info with some pics on that CG trans from the old sohc integra.
http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2276278

im kinda interested to see if anybody has cracked a sleeve in a d16 too. i melted a hole in a vitara and left a melted pit in the cylinder wall almost through the cast iron and i didn't crack a sleeve. this was with a block guard though, im sure it would have been a different story if i hadn't had a block guard.

thats some cool ------- carnage there. and I have a b18b block with a cracked sleeve in my garage :8 its for sale :8

Re: cracked sleeve in D-series...whos got pics?

ehh, i melted a piston in my B18A too... i dont think its got the same stress on the sleeve as your standard detonation sleeve breaking...

ill tackle transmission issues when it comes time. i will most likely be using a EF chassis... gotta get back to my HMT roots ;)

Re: cracked sleeve in D-series...whos got pics?

I personally have cracked ALL FOUR of my Wiseco pistons in my gt3076r mini me and my cylinder walls were not cracked, Honestly I could have run a hone through the block and probably used it again.

I did however do the Hotrex Devcon block guard. So that might have saved it? :-\

You know what I think Jeff Frank broke a sleeve in his red crx with the original pinks sohc motor that had the wheeze head on it with boost

i know he did... and honestly, it had HMT block posting (almost positive). not sure how much i trust that. it was in Blue Thunder... and pinks car never had a D-series lol

heres mine :P taken with a cell phone so the pics arent that great.

18psi on a t3/t4 60 trim, just made a new bin with Crome and forgot to change the injector scaling to 550s, added a ton of fuel and wouldnt make a difference on the afrs. kept ------- with it and i guess the engine decided it had enough. this was with forged i-beams and 75.5mm SRPs

currently running 20psi on the same turbo, rods, and pistons...only a new block :6

sohc short block with dohc head! does that mean that the sohc sleeves are "better" than the dohc?

Re: cracked sleeve in D-series...whos got pics?

since the cylinders are smaller in diameter it makes sense that they would be stronger. the PSI in the cylinder is the same, but it has less area to push on. i may be wrong, but it makes sense in my head

If the sleeve thickness is equivalent or the same size, yes.

You have to make more pressure in a cylinder with a smaller bore to make X whp... a larger bore does it easier due to more surface area to push against.

Re: cracked sleeve in D-series...whos got pics?

Just throw some fun into the mix b16a sleeves/stock rods taking beatings like red headed step children and their transmissions dont fail

turbohf 11-28-2008 05:25 PM

Re: cracked sleeve in D-series...whos got pics?

already did the B16, she didnt like the beating and broke a valve. :(

Re: cracked sleeve in D-series...whos got pics?

I think the B-series are more prone to breaking sleeves because everyone is all rev-happy with them. The all motor boys experience some failures due to twisting engines 9K+. With a D-series the ports choke and the most you typically see is 8K, with a little less rotational loading due to the lighter piston/rods.

Might not have anything to do with reality, just thinking aloud.

Also the ratio of 300 whp+ b series to d series has to be 100 to 1

im going to say the coolant coming into the cylinder after the sleeve breaking, then being burnt in the combustion cycle....

argh. Why didn't I think of that? I have seen plugs like that plenty of times with blown headgaskets
