digital or dial guage?

if its digital it will read - instead of a positive #.

if its a dial it wont read at all.

just think of the path of the current, alternator doesnt draw in electricity does it? :P

ammeters read + and - flow, but are unsafe as most don't use 10-12 gauge wire.

Use a voltmeter instead, less chance of car fire.

FYI with a ammeter, ALL current goes thru the gauge, think about the losses involved.
