Tweak TDC pins until you get a good startup and idle, then play with CKP and CYP polarity until the CEL goes away *and* the timing is correct (with engine warmed up, and dist centered... might be 1-4 degrees off if your head's been milled)

Each and every last sensor has to have the correct polarity, period. Depending on which is off, you throw diff sensor codes, and they aren't neccesarily the codes for the sensor that is reversed - that is what makes it confusing.
If you get the car to start and idle clean, then you KNOW the TDC is fine regardless of any code 4's or not. From there you play with the polarity of the CYP and CYL so you end up with no codes AND your base timing is correct.
Also make sure you have correct resistance across each dist sensor, and no path to ground across the sensors. Dist might be defective, you know.
