I've never had any luck with air tools on that ------- bolt. I've tried all the other ideas (rope in cylinder, foot on the brake in 5th, chain wrench on pulley) and the only thing that works consistently for me is:

1. Find a helper
2. Take off the flywheel cover on the underside of the car
3. Use an appropriately sized prybar or huge screwdriver, and lodge it between the teeth of the flywheel near the bottom of the transmission. This prevents the crankshaft from rotating, and won't slip.
4. Use a 1/2" breaker bar (not a ratchet, you'll break it) with an impact socket, as well as the longest cheater bar you can find. I use a 5' steet pipe that used to be part of a car roof rack.
5. With your helper bracing the prybar, break the bolt free. Pull evenly and don't jerk, and it'll come out.

I strongly second the suggestion on PB Blaster...good luck! -Z

---- that.. I bought the best 1/2 impact from Matco, and they come off flying now. My old air-gun couldnt budge the damn things.

And it is normal rotation, Lefty

i put my handle from my big jack on the breaker bar with a 17mm impact socket.

i have seen normal sockets turn to butter when putting that much pressure on em..

I really wouldn't expect any piston rings to hold a pool of oil. That ---- looks like the deep fryer at Mcdonalds, take that oil out.

no just crank it really fast and watch her blow. we had to revive a motor that sat for a year or so and went a little overboard with oiling the rings. spout a good 6 ft heh

A couple tool companies sell an attachment to hold the crank in place like that moroso, but it's cheaper and uses a 1/2" drive to hold it. Here is a link:

Yea, Ive got one, bought it from a sk dealer for 49 bucks, that and a 1/2 inch breaker bar and your set. Usually unless you have a good sized compressor, and a really big impact(like 3/4 drive) your stuck. My snap on IM 500 wont usually take them off. (good sized 1/2 inch impact) so the best thing you can do is once you do get it off, use antisieze when you put it back together. Being a professional, I use the stuff on everything. spark plugs, bolts, nuts, and especially crank pully bolts.

screw that. i'd rather rent a mig from home depot for a whole day (30-40$), a pipe for <6$, a big nut 2$(?), weld em together and have the rest of the day to weld other stuff.
