ej20 twin turbo out of the b4 legacy, cheap easy and no one wants them. The RS trannys are different than the wrx ones.

They bolt up the same, use that stupid pull type clutch and have the same gear ratio. But the usdm RS is known to have weaker internals. You can use a 2002wrx mnotor with a 98rs ts tranny but youll break it. I duno whats weaker, i just know they arent the same.

i asked the senior subie master tech about the difference and he said it was the vicious coupler for the center diff, and something with the shifting forks or linkage or some ----? been a while but i'm pretty sure thats what he said

Makes sense I guess. My buddy blew up his tranny last week so we put a 4.44 out of the legacy turbo in it.

Have you ever driven a 914 with more than 200hp? It makes the shittiest of crx's feel like a lexus.

Its a god-damned deathtrap is what it is.

Trust me, you dont want more than 200hp. You will kill yourself.

I gotta go with JD on this one though, Type IV ---- can still be had for reasonable prices, and most of the 911sc front suspension swaps over. You can have 200whp with the n/a engine thats in it for not too much $$$, provided you rebuild it yourself. Hicompression rebuild kits start in the $350 range and go up.

Also, how much rust has your car endured? If you have rust in the frame below the battery tray hang it up and find something else.

The 901 trans can be built to handle the power, but its really not worth it. Ideally, if you absolutely must do a swap, dont use the porsche trans unless you can get a Getrag on the cheap (i doubt it) or a G50 unit. I cant help but think that despite the 901's short comings, its still a better option than the subie trans just because of subie's endless ability to fail at making a decent transmission.

Stick with the aircooled, keep it simple. If you keep it under 300hp the stock trans (in working order) wont be your problem. Everything else will.

BTW, when you get fed up with this project, PM me and ill gladly take the car off your hands.

Where can i get a rebuild kit for $350? please show me. So far i haven't found anything under $500 for pistons and cylinders only.

About the rust, the car didn't have much under the battery tray but what was there i have already fixed.
