Default Anybody ever take a tranny apart? Hehehe I just did!

I'm practicing on a junk tranny. I'm really just curious and want to know how to install one of those Arizona Race LSD units. How the hell do I get the differential out? I have been ------- with this thing forever and can't figure out how to get it out.

How the ---- do I get this out?

Pretty fun huh Doc? I used to do that for a while. I'm not exactly sure how to remove it, but I know that most of the time theres a snap ring that holds alot of your parts in the tranny. you may need to rotate the gear so you can see it to get access to it. If there isn't one, you may need a pulling tool of some type to remove that bearing, then the gear should come off. Don't hold me to it, I'm just taking a guess, but let us know what happens man.

take the shift things out. (royal pita.) u can slide the shafts out if you hit the main one with a hammer after u got the shift things off the gears.

as for getting the diff out. get a big *** crow bar and pop it out. it isnt pressed in there hard. just give it some stank.

tip: to get the shift pins out loosen the little bolt that goes into the shift shaft near the diff then wack the groove with a chisel and spin it around. (warning, there are ball bearing and springs when u slide the shift pins out.. they will fly!)

i took all the gears off mine but that was not nessesary now that i look at how the trani goes toghther.

Yeah, there was one of those snap rings holding the casing together. That was a bitch to get off. I don't know how I'm going to get it back on. It got pretty hot outside so I gave up on it for today. It's about 112 right now and I'm not about to go sit in the garage.

Ok, I think I have an idea. After reading this: http://home.cinci.rr.com/mistab0ne/tranny.html I'm thinking about making myself a tranny. If these gears will work in the correct places I'm going to make one hell of a close ratio tranny.

Using these gears:
EX/Si
1st-----3.250
2nd-----1.900
3rd-----1.250
4th-----0.909
5th-----0.750 for Si HB and Del sol Si
or------0.702 for 2 dr or 4 dr sedan
Final Drive---4.250

DX
1st-----3.250
2nd-----1.762
3rd-----1.172
4th-----0.909
5th-----0.702
Final Drive---4.058

I'm going to use an SI tranny. Keep the first gear and second gear. Swap the third with the DX second. Swap the fourth with the DX third and the DX fourth with the SI fifth and keep the SI final. This will give me an insane close ratio.

My new gears would go like this:
1st. 35.2 MPH@7200RPM
2nd. 60.2MPH@7200RPM
3rd. ~70~MPH@7200
4th. ~90~MPH@7200RPM
5th. 124.5MPH@6800RPM

My RPM would be a bit lower and the 3rd and 4th would be a bit off, but that's about what would happen. Now I just have to find out if they will fit. I'm pretty sure they will. Then on top of all that I would install a Twin-Trac LSD. What do ya think?

Damn it!! I missed your post!! I started taking all of the gears off already. It's really a bitch isn't it? How the hell do you get the shifter mabobber out? It looks like you could almost bend it out of the wasy to get the gears out. I studied that thing for hours and pryed on it all over the place and nothing. I loosed that bolt and still couldn't get it. I have to take the gears off anyways I guess. The fun part is trying to figure out which gear is which.

Close ratio would be more for racing. It will keep the engine in the upper rpm band where the power is. So instead of hitting 90+ in third I would be hitting 70 and get there WAY quicker.

I dunno? Would it fit? That would be a pain to get a hold of. I already have an extra DX tranny that I can steal gears from. I don't have any ls trannies.
