Best thing for you to do is pull the HD and copy all your files off of it. onto another computer. Then, wipe the drive and instal a fresh copy of XP over it.One of your hive files is damaged. Unless you backed them up - you didn't - it requires a reinstall.

how do these files get damaged, sir? i have really NO idea, i mastered dos 5.0 and windows 3.1 and i quit there.

Digi-nerds, windows locks up and is powered down while one of those files is being modified, god hates you, ad nauseam.

---- happens and will happen all the time. Technology will never be perfect. Could be anything from a sudden movement of a computer to computer dying out over time.

That's what I do every time someone brings me there fucked up computer with viruses. Only remove documents on request.
I would rather give them a fresh computer than spend 2 hours finding the ------- problem and another 2 fixing. Reinstalling only takes 1 hour with all the programs installed.

You don't need to reinstall Windows or any sort of that junk.

Pop the hard drive into another computer and take the automatically created registry backup files from the second most recent system restore point (assuming you have it turned on, which it is by default).

Copy those files over the corrupted registry.

Pop the drive back into the original machine and boot it up.

Problem solved.

Exact instructions on how to do this are available on Microsoft's website at:

If you go in recovery console you can CP the files over. You don't need to take your hardrive out or anything like that.

Not really, even if does not boot up it is fine. As long as the hard drive has not ---- it self you can recover everything. Another way would be to use Ubuntu, burnt onto a cd as a iso; and boot from cd. Then procced to recover what you need. BTW fixing a ---- up Xp computer with another Xp computer is just asking for it :1. BTW where are you located? If you are some what local I can help you out.
