Re: windows XP guru's Chime in
One of your (4) Windows hive files is damaged/missing. It happens sometimes, and unless you backed them up - you didn't, or else you'd know what they are - your install of XP is lost forever. FYI the hive files contain *every* setting for your system, software installed on it, security, users and their preferences, etc. Basically the database XP refers to to figure out wtf to do.
Best thing for you to do is pull the HD and copy all your files off of it. onto another computer. Then, wipe the drive and instal a fresh copy of XP over it.One of your hive files is damaged. Unless you backed them up - you didn't - it requires a reinstall. |

Re: windows XP guru's Chime in
Download XP of the same version that you have installed right now. (Home/Pro)
Boot from cd First screen do not use the recovery repair, hit enter instead Second screen i think is where you press the F8 button Thirdly is where the repair screen is going to be (Make sure that you also have a CD key on the back, you'll need one to finish repair) (If all above is done correctly, you will reinstall just the windows part and all programs/files/documents will stay and will not be affected.) Here's what I found online after writings what's above, I was pretty close. # Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order. # When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer: To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER. To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R. To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3. # Press Enter to start the Windows Setup. To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER. do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R". # Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations. # Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. # Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact. |

Re: windows XP guru's Chime in
Digi-nerds, windows locks up and is powered down while one of those files is being modified, god hates you, ad nauseam.

---- happens and will happen all the time. Technology will never be perfect. Could be anything from a sudden movement of a computer to computer dying out over time.

----... i bit the bullet and ------ just lost everything and re installed windows. everytime i would fix something, something else would go wrong..... im all good now., Just got to start from scratch!

Re: windows XP guru's Chime in
That's what I do every time someone brings me there fucked up computer with viruses. Only remove documents on request.
I would rather give them a fresh computer than spend 2 hours finding the ------- problem and another 2 fixing. Reinstalling only takes 1 hour with all the programs installed. |
Re: windows XP guru's Chime in
You don't need to reinstall Windows or any sort of that junk.
Pop the hard drive into another computer and take the automatically created registry backup files from the second most recent system restore point (assuming you have it turned on, which it is by default). Copy those files over the corrupted registry. Pop the drive back into the original machine and boot it up. Problem solved. Exact instructions on how to do this are available on Microsoft's website at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 |
Re: windows XP guru's Chime in
If you go in recovery console you can CP the files over. You don't need to take your hardrive out or anything like that.

Re: windows XP guru's Chime in
the recovery console works 85% of the time and if it doesnt put the hd in another computer and use as a slave and copy what you want to save over then reinstall windows on it then copy files back to the computer and your set. you deff. need a windows xp cd though well both cd's and a xp key if you reinstall.

Re: windows XP guru's Chime in
I prefer swapping the drive into another PC, but the recovery console works as well. To each his own. I just find it a lot quicker to use the GUI then to type all the commands with the recovery console.
If you have not already wiped and reinstalled, DON'T. It's totally unnecessary. Just restoring the registry from the backup will put the machine back to it's original state. There is no need to run a recovery install, or reinstall in any way shape or form. This is a 5 minute fix with no data or program loss. You don't need an XP CD to fix this if you have another computer you can put the hard drive into. |
Re: windows XP guru's Chime in
md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak delete c:\windows\system32\config\system delete c:\windows\system32\config\software delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam delete c:\windows\system32\config\security delete c:\windows\system32\config\default copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default Copy / Paste that in notepad. Save. Rename .txt to .bat. Put that in your root drive directory and, or a backup drive. If it happens, load the recovery console and run the batch file. For anyone still using XP, quit installing windows xp pro torrents like a goober and install TinyXP. If you're a newbie take the red pill and install with option 1. If you know what you're doing strip the god damned son of a bitch bare. |

Re: windows XP guru's Chime in
Just spit on it a bit.

Re: windows XP guru's Chime in
What error did you receive when typing the commands into the recovery console?
As for it being a laptop drive, that's why an adapter is so nice to have. |
