Re: who has been to auto school
i went to a auto-tech school for 12 weeks (8 full hours/day, 5 days a week). I didnt know jack ----, zero, nada about autos/cars prior. After 12 weeks, I could recite the parts of STANADYNEŽ/ROOSAMASTERŽ "DB" pump (diesel injector pump with a lot of parts). But if you opened up your hood then and asked me where the alternator was, I wouldnt know. haha.
the only thing that school was good for is the paper that i got after completion.

Re: who has been to auto school
I did the automotive pre-apprenticship at my local college and I came out after 5 months with all the basic skills one needs to enter the automotive repair industry.I think alot of those automotive schools/colleges are somewhat overrated for what you pay. Most technical schools also offer the Company related programs such as Fords asset, Toyota T-TEP and Honda/Acura AHAP to name a few.You should really think this through as I thought I wanted to be a mechanic as well because I was a cur nut since 15 and it seamed natural.I bailed in the 2nd year as the pat was the *****,i worked on pieces of ---- all the time and with all the tools you purchase to be a mechanic the wage atleast where I live isn't nearly enough.I have gone back to do the Millwrights apprenticeship where I will make 10-15 an hour more and not have to buy many tools.I imagine dealerships would probably be alot better to work at then the smaller garages i was in.

i just started at wyotech, and so far it's been pretty good. the teachers know their ----, and it's easy to pick up the stuff you gotta learn. i've been to anoka tech in MN too, and it was ok for a local tech school like that

Re: who has been to auto school
I wasn't sure. The garage I worked in was excellent as far as the people I worked with and quality of worked turned out was as good as anywhere. My problem was I was always working on Tempos,Aerostar vans[ever done plugs in one?] and other various cars that probably should have been removed from the road rather than repaired.I do think that where I worked helped me learn a good diversity of skills as everything from Saabs to Chevy pickups rolled through the doors.Im not trying to discourage anyone from entering the trade just make sure you are 100% on being a mechanic.I have lots of tools at home in my garage now so I guess it worked out in the end.I think wages will start to increase now that alot of the older mechanics are getitng out of the trade and the technology on older vehicles coming in the garage has changed rapidly.

Re: who has been to auto school
I remember i got to school thinking i new somethin cause i read some ---- on the internet and played with a car or two, ive never been more wrong. Before i had an idea how things worked but nothing compared to now, its ridicullous. Dont go to school if you want to be a mechanic and not think youll be spendin alot on tools, Most places get really good discounts on snap-on and matco tools. My school gets 60% on snap on and 50% on matco. even if i dont go out into the field i still plan to buy a ---- load of tools id use anyway, if you use them on only your car maintenance theyll pay for themselves quick.
