your pips look good but after switching from arc to mig ill never go back . hitting the slag with the hammer and having it chip back into your eye isnt fun anymore. but i can through down a row of nickel any day on a ARC ;D

As always you get what you pay for... That's a shitty flux welder. It will never be any more than that. I spent $600 on my MIG and $3000 on my TIG. They were the best machines I could afford and the quality of welding reflects that. First I'd try to find a used lincoln with the gas conversion kit. That will probably give you much better for the same general price.

You're talking to mostly kids who are still debating on wether to think about turbo or sex, who also stil live at home and having problem with thier mom not letting them putting a turbo on. Thus dissing out 600$ for a mig and 3000$ for a tig is a bit out of the question. A mig can be had for relatively cheap, flux will be alot harder to learn on, so i suggest you put down a bit more and get a Mig with gas.

flux works better than mig on dirty or rusty metals.

why are you welding dirty metal? It makes for a weak/shitty weld not matter what ou use.

I have that same welder, and yes it's a pile of ----, but it gets the job done. Splatter sucks and the welds suck, but they have been holding for me. :-\

My biggest complaint is the wire feed motor. That piece of ---- gets jammed all the time and sometimes it just gets crazy and unspools itself and I have to spend an hour spooling it back up. >:( That really pisses me off.

Why not go for a 150 amp tig welder for 400$ ?

Because that's like a $320 difference and for welding charge pipes and downpipes an $80 should do the trick. :P

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a nice welder, but for what I use it for, I think I'd stick with the cheapy welder. I have access to a very nice welder if I need one.

Well welders are often used for repairs, not just for fabricating new stuff. Old stuff that needs repairing is very often rusty and ----.
It just takes very little to get bubbles in the MIG welds.
In fact MIG welds are rarely airtight. Still better than flux core wire feeders.

so what would i be looking for i a MIG welder when i want some decent looking welds? tools are limited, no angle grinder and such... i'll be cutting these pipes with hand tools :-[
