welders, please chime in (charge pipes & exhaust pipes)

so is 90amps sufficient in welding charge pipes and exhaust pipes?

For exhausts yeah, but I wouldn't do chargepipes with it. Seriously, a MIG gas welder is worth every penny over a flux. If you welded before you'd understand

i've never welded before in my life :-[

Flux is a complete bitch with slag everywhere and disgusting welds. With a mig, in a Day you'll make decent welds. A mig is worth every penny over Flux. Most people who buy Flux's usually end up selling them or get discouraged cause they think welding is really hard, but in reality flux is just so sloppy

That will work fine and if you tell them you have the catalog where its 79.99 and the back cover is ripped off they will give you that price. Its 79.99 in the newest catalog.

Actually I like welding exhausts with my wire feed welder. I get some good looking beads that are strong enough for exhausts/chargepipes, and the slag spray is minimal. It's really not bad for me. It took alot of practice to get used to, and I'm sure I'd be better off with a MIG, but this does just fine for me now with what I work on.

Re:welders, please chime in (charge pipes & exhaust pipes)

I agree. A good weld can be laid with a flux core. I weld alot with both flux and Gas, Yes a gas looks better, but with practice some times the only difference between the welds is the slag which can be clean with a wire brush.

Just get the right settings. If you have too much wire a flux core will REALLY splater!

Re:welders, please chime in (charge pipes & exhaust pipes)

you can do a decent weld with flux if the wire isn't old ---- but not as nice as mig. Its much harder to learn also, flux works good in a mig if your welding outside with any kind of wind. I would save the extra scratch and go with gas you wont be sorry ;)

Re:welders, please chime in (charge pipes & exhaust pipes)

That flux core wire feed was the one i learned to weld on and i mean you really LEARN b/c it is a little harder than a nice mig. Even some of my buddies who own a body shop where impressed after seeing my welds that i had made using their big bad ass mig at the shop. its soo easy with a nice machine but not all of us weld enough to justify spending $600+ on a nice mig.

plus who really cares what the welds look like... thats what an angle grinder is for... check out my charge pipes on my project, ------- flawless! link in my sig.

dosn't look like flux on that mani ::)

your pips look good but after switching from arc to mig ill never go back . hitting the slag with the hammer and having it chip back into your eye isnt fun anymore. but i can through down a row of nickel any day on a ARC ;D

As always you get what you pay for... That's a shitty flux welder. It will never be any more than that. I spent $600 on my MIG and $3000 on my TIG. They were the best machines I could afford and the quality of welding reflects that. First I'd try to find a used lincoln with the gas conversion kit. That will probably give you much better for the same general price.

You're talking to mostly kids who are still debating on wether to think about turbo or sex, who also stil live at home and having problem with thier mom not letting them putting a turbo on. Thus dissing out 600$ for a mig and 3000$ for a tig is a bit out of the question. A mig can be had for relatively cheap, flux will be alot harder to learn on, so i suggest you put down a bit more and get a Mig with gas.

flux works better than mig on dirty or rusty metals.

why are you welding dirty metal? It makes for a weak/shitty weld not matter what ou use.

Re:welders, please chime in (charge pipes & exhaust pipes)

I have that same welder, and yes it's a pile of ----, but it gets the job done. Splatter sucks and the welds suck, but they have been holding for me. :-\

My biggest complaint is the wire feed motor. That piece of ---- gets jammed all the time and sometimes it just gets crazy and unspools itself and I have to spend an hour spooling it back up. >:( That really pisses me off.

Why not go for a 150 amp tig welder for 400$ ?

Because that's like a $320 difference and for welding charge pipes and downpipes an $80 should do the trick. :P

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a nice welder, but for what I use it for, I think I'd stick with the cheapy welder. I have access to a very nice welder if I need one.

Well welders are often used for repairs, not just for fabricating new stuff. Old stuff that needs repairing is very often rusty and ----.
It just takes very little to get bubbles in the MIG welds.
In fact MIG welds are rarely airtight. Still better than flux core wire feeders.

so what would i be looking for i a MIG welder when i want some decent looking welds? tools are limited, no angle grinder and such... i'll be cutting these pipes with hand tools :-[

where talking CHARGE PIPES and EXHAUST PIPES folks! where not making ------ wannabe full-race manifolds for comercial sale. Splatter my ass this is ------- HMT... learn to use a HF angle grinder.

i'm just pisst b/c i can't have a nice MIG in my garage. actually that HF welder is a piece of ---- that gets the job done... no one is disputing that. just b/c you get a MIG dosn't mean that your charge/exhaust pipes are gonna be any better, you'll end up using an angle grinder on them anyway.

if you know how to weld you can probably figure out how to weld with anything... and if you can weld with a peice of ---- HF FLUX CORE welder, you can weld anything! ;D

I agree. If you dont have a lot of money and you just want it for charge pipes and exhausts that will do.Like evosol said, the angle grider is your best friend ;)
