Thinking of getting ASE certified. Any advice?

about the A+ thing...my brother-in-law, i consider him a wiz at really technical computer ----, codes and all of that....and he has taken that A+ ---- and passed it, but there is some other test he is having alot of problems with. as someone else said, his books are huge thick! to big for me. big books scare me, unless they are full of pictures.

Most of the CompTIA certifications are pretty much a joke. Anyone in the computer industry that can't pass them needs to find another line of work. They charge you $200 a piece for a little piece of paper that says you know fairly basic Hardware/Software/Networking skills. The only place they serve any purpose is if you're trying to get into an IT field and have no experience or degree. To me, that's still a joke because you can get MCP and CCNA both for around $200-300 and they'll take you much further and show you have a much more broad background. The trade off to that is that they're both quite a bit harder than any of the CompTIA stuff.

I have been a ASE master tech for eight years(all certifications) as well as a Wagner ABS master. I dont think it ever did a thing for me. Most employers are looking for on the job experience. Something they can see, not some piece of paper. It mght be diferent in other places, but in Richmond VA all the shop formen talk amongst themselves about the techs. When a new guy gets hired they know from his past work experience what he is all about. Auto mechanic is a good way to make a living, I was making about $50K a year when I quit to start CCA. If I where you I would try to get on at a large used car dealer like CarMax or Drive Time, get on the job training and move up from there. Its about the only "safe job" anymore, I have never seen a good mechanic get layed off or downsized.
