I work in the car audio industry.

I'm exposed to all kinds of systems on a daily basis.

I must say that the "Xplod" line of amps are disappointing at best.

Re:Sony amps

Sony was producing some nice pieces not too long ago with the "Mobile ES" line.

Sony bought into the "more money in advertising....less money in product" attitude.

The result is an inferior product being sold to the masses who don't know any better.

A classic example of this is Audiobahn (only they never made a quality product).

Re:Sony amps

sony amps is only good for show, I have two and they get overheated and cut out after 30 minutes, with audiobahn subs, they sucks!

Re:Sony amps

i own 2 of the mobile es amps and there the best amps ive ever own they have never cut out on me

Re:Sony amps

I currently carry Sony in my shop, but its on its way out the door. What I have in stock I'm gonna sell but I will never order anymore Sony. They should stick to home theater and Playstations. Mobile ES was nice, but there are better products out there now. I'm going to replace Sony with JVC I think, they have some hot new products coming out, and the price points are similar. By the way, I am an area exclusive Excelon and Pioneer Premier dealer, so if you need anything hit me up. I'm also an exclusive dealer of MTX Thunder 9500 subs, which in my opinion are the best all-around subs on the market today. Hit me up if you want to know more about them. I have a 12 sitting here next to me and the thing weighs about 60 lbs!!

the best amp i ever had was a memphis.

Re:Sony amps

Believe it or, I've been rockin a plain ol Kenwood 1000 watt amp for about 2 years and this bitch won't DIE!! I beat the ---- out of it in an audio sense and its a damn tank!! I'm gonna eventually replace it with an MTX or Excelon amp, but until it dies, I'm sold on it. I have it flush-mounted in a faux wall on the side of my trunk so when I switch out amps, I have a lot of rebuilding to do, so I'm in no hurry.

davcivic 01-27-2004 09:18 AM

Re:Sony amps

My kenwood 650 it's been abused for over 4 years, and the last 2 years it's been pushing 2 MTX 12's and works great. And those MTX subs are awesome.

imadouche 01-27-2004 11:38 AM

Re:Sony amps

500 watt JL audio with two 12 kenwood tornados in a fiberglass filled box that ---- was louder than most people with 1500 watts and 4 subs and it was heavy as hell

most amps are lucky to make half the power they claim i think JL Kicker and PPI amps normally make the power they advertise

Re:Sony amps

I have a pioneer mp4500. Stock vs It, it kills the stock. I just dont like the way it displays the file names and the volume control button sucks.....I got a 5 year warranty on it so if a new model comes out w/ a turn knob to control the volume, im just going to ---- up this one and get the newer model.

Re:Sony amps

ive owned one of these and installed another in a friends truck they put out 300w@4ohm 600w@2ohm and 1000w@1ohm(RMS) mine got fried along with my head unit because i got a short across my 4gauge wire so this was my fault. but the one in my friends truck is fine and really bangs not many amps are rated to run down to 1ohm but this unit is/was i had no problem with mine other i shorted it out real bad so i felt it was a quality product for the price, buy them on ebay(1/2 price), mine had good sound quality and more power than i expected out of a low price amp. not saying they are or arnt a piece of ---- but i had no problems and will be buying a 2 or 4 channel amp of there brand because i cant afford rockford fosgate amps

I had that same amp that he burned, it worked alright, but in my car all it was pushing was an 8" JL. But that was all stolen about 2 years ago, so no worries. I hope mine broke for whoever stole it. Now I don't even have a radio installed, it's just a hole in the dash...

I listen to the sounds of the car for entertainment...

HCCA owns all of you. :P I'm not into "systems" anymore, but if I were to get back in, my choice would be the HCCA series of Orion. I had 3 HCCA 225's pushing all kinds of ----, mainly 2 HE2 12's. I love those amps. I was running them at 1ohm mono for years without any problems. 8)

Why do you hate sound systems?

I bet you don't hate music. If I'm right, and you don't hate music, than you probably have a favorite kind of music or a favorite band that you like to listen to.

Wouldn't you agree that it's better to listen to your favorite music the way that the artist intended?

Most factory systems simply cannot provide an acurate reproduction of the recorded music. This is one reason for upgrading the sound system in your car...Where a lot of people spend a good portion of their day.

...and if it's the way some people drive past your house "thumping", then it was never the sound system that you hated.

Just the people who do that.

Re:Sony amps

Yea i have to agree the ES line was ok at best, the rest of the stuff sucks ass. I had 3 sony decks and all sounded good but never worked right, 2 skipped to all hell and one would never keep radio presets, even tho the wiring was correct and itd never lose power to the battery wire, and the ground was good. They all broke buttons on the faceplates too. Ive had great sucess with the durability and quality of alpine and pioneer decks, but pioneer amps suck. Orion is nice but really expensive. If you want quality like that youre gonna really pay... i think stuff like phoenix gold and soundstream are compareable

d16forlife 01-27-2004 09:31 PM

Re:Sony amps

I just bought an Eclipse head unit. The one with the %volt preouts and I cant believe the sound quality. Its feeding an Alpine % channel amp wich are feeding Boston acoustics all around and an 8" base tube. Its not earth shattering but ist the cleanest sound Ive heard so far.

Xplo im gonna hit you up couse I want a 2 channel amp and 1 more base tube so I can use the non fader output and use the front and rear X-overs(features on the head unit) to clean out the sound a little more.

i agree. i ran 2 of those for 9 years before they were stolen. 1 at 1 ohm mono running 4 jl 8" and the other running pair of 6.5" midbass, 1" tweets, 5.25" coax, and a single 3" center channel.

i switched to the sx amps and have had them for 8 years...good stuff.

Re:Sony amps

I've had 2 old fosgate bbq grill amps in my car for 7 years. I have a 60ix bridged mono into 2 shitty crunch 12's in an isobaric enclosure and a 40i pushing 4 6½'s. Not that great of a system, but it sounds good to me and has been all this time. These Amp's are rock solid. If I upgrade anytime, I'll probably get a matching 100ix off ebay because I like these so much.

Any thoughts from the audio guru's?

Many people will talk bad about Fosgate, but I'm loyal to that brand...Always have been.

I currently have five of them operating in my system...2300 watts RMS @ 4 ohms.

I compete in sound quality & have taken 6 trophies out of 6 competitions using these amps.

Re:Sony amps

stretch-d,

No I dont agree at all. When i see the lil wigger wannabee's around here they are blasting there ---- not so they can hear it, but so that everyone else has to.

Hell i've even seen the fuckers wearing ear plugs!

I dont mind during the day most of the time but sometimes its at 2 am and I hate that. I dont listen to music that would need that most of the time, I mean some bass is good but dont make 3 city blocks hear your ----.

stretch-d 01-28-2004 12:13 AM

Re:Sony amps

This is a prime example on how a few people who play their systems too loud at the wrong time can ruin a good thing for everyone.

I understand where you're comming from.

I'm against forcing other people to listen to what I'm listening to, but some people do this as a form of expression (at the expense of all others).

When I jam, my windows are usually up.

Edit: When you have a well balanced system, it doesn't require large amounts of bass to sound good.

airtonics 01-28-2004 12:27 AM

Re:Sony amps

Its always a few ppl that ruin something for the majority.

Anyways I see your point too, I myself would like some better sounding speakers and maybe 1 10" sub. I see no problem with that. There is just a limit is all, one person does not need 8 12" subs in the back of his car lol.

If your windows are up, thats great, down on a hot day...ok fine. You know the sterotype i'm talkin about though ;)

stretch-d 01-28-2004 12:34 AM

Re:Sony amps

Yes I do. (nods head)

I'm 33 now and have been doing this as a hobby for 15 yrs & 3 yrs professionally. I think I'll be an old man 40 yrs from now and still have a system.

I know these systems add weight, but I think (if done right) it can really add to the driving experience.

I think you're a good canidate for sound quality airtronics.
