Rings and bearings...
 

what should i expect to pay for rings and bearings (rod/main) on my z6? I'm trying to work out my motor budget, and I'm not sure what these are going to cost me from honda.

also, do you guys reccomend using OEM rings (on non-OEM pistons) or do you reccomend using something like topseal?

i just use napa rings :).. and bearings, for a whole set from honda is 320 dollars if i remember correctly.

I've used napa rings before with no problems, and have used factory ones several times also without problems. The one time I did have problems I used total seal rings, hah. I would just stick to a stock style ring with a proper end gap you shouldnt have problems. Obviously factory rings are going to be more pricey than the napa/schucks specials. Same with bearings. Me personally on a motor I care about I use factory bearings and always will, for something I'm slapping together (and am on a budget) I use napa/schucks bearings. Most aftermarket bearings are all "green" in the middle of the bunch and are pretty close to the right size ;)

I'm planning on using OEM bearings, it is the rings I am questioning. I'd like to keep the budget down as much as possible.

is it nessesary for me to take the crank out to hot tank the block? the main bearings are all perfect and there is only 70k on the motor. I am just putting rods and pistons in, but I figured I'd hot tank it while I had it apart. If I could leave the crank in it would cut my bearing cost down by a whole ------- lot. or should I just man up and do it right?

Yeah ive been wondering all this too... I have a second engine im working with... What exactly is the cost difference and the quality etc difference? Is there really anything wrong with leaving the stock bearings in if they plastigauge good (in spec)if youre just doing pistons and maybe rods? Ive personally seen it done both ways

Aren't you not supposed to hot tank honda blocks b/c the ---- they use eats up the aluminum?

I'd look into that... I don't know if there's a difference between 'hot tanking' as you refer to it and the chemical baths they sometimes give as well... or if they are one in the same..?

You can take the crank out as long as you put all of the bearings back where they were. It's not like if you take them out thier toast.

call a machine shop. i got my set for less then a hundred. mains and rods even came with the thrust washers. rings were like $29 much cheaper then NAPA or checker

by hot tank I mean detergent bath, not solvent tank.
